Abstract

Cardiac tissue ablation catheters including an inflatable and flexible toroidal or spherically shaped balloon disposed at a distal region of an elongate member, a flexible circuit carried by an outer surface of the balloon, the flexible circuit including, a plurality of flexible branches conforming to the radially outer surface of the balloon, each of the plurality of flexible branches including a substrate, a conductive trace carried by the substrate, and an ablation electrode carried by the substrate, the ablation electrode in electrical communication with the conductive trace, and an elongate shaft comprising a guidewire lumen extending in the elongate member and extending from a proximal region of the inflatable balloon to distal region of the inflatable balloon and being disposed within the inflatable balloon, wherein a distal region of the elongate shaft is secured directly or indirectly to the distal region of the inflatable balloon.

Claims (18)

1. A cardiac tissue ablation device, comprising:

an inflatable and flexible balloon disposed at a distal region of an elongate member, the balloon having a toroidal or spherical configuration when inflated;

a plurality of flexible substrate branches adhered to an outer surface of the balloon along the length of the flexible substrate branch, the plurality of flexible substrate branches extending from a proximal region of the balloon to a distal region of the balloon;

a plurality of electrodes, each one carried by one of the plurality of flexible substrate branches, each of the plurality of electrodes flexible such that the electrode conforms to the curved configuration of the balloon when the balloon is inflated to the toroidal or spherical configuration, wherein each of the plurality of flexible substrate branches has a top surface and a bottom surface, and a plurality of holes each extending through the top and bottom surfaces, the plurality of holes located at a periphery of the respective flexible substrate branch adjacent an outer edge of the respective flexible substrate branch, wherein the plurality of holes do not extend through the balloon and do not extend through the electrode, wherein the plurality of holes have an adhesive therein,

wherein each of the plurality of electrodes has a proximal end and a distal end, and wherein each of the plurality of electrodes has a width that increases from the proximal end to a greatest width and then decreases from the greatest width to the distal end, wherein the decrease in width of the electrode from the greatest width to the distal end is more gradual than is the increase in the width from the proximal end to the greatest width, wherein a length of each of the plurality of electrodes from the greatest width to the distal end is greater than a length of the electrode from the proximal end to the greatest width;

a plurality of conductors, each one of which is in electrical communication with one of the plurality of electrodes; and

wherein a first of the plurality of flexible substrate branches also carries, in addition to one of the plurality of electrodes, a mapping electrode and a mapping electrode conductor that is in electrical communication with the mapping electrode,

the mapping electrode being axially spaced from the electrode that is carried by the first flexible substrate branch, and the mapping electrode having a smaller surface area than the electrode.

2. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an elongate balloon actuator extending within the balloon, the elongate balloon actuator secured to a distal region of the balloon, wherein the elongate balloon actuator is axially movable relative to the elongate member.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the mapping electrodes is distally spaced from the electrode.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the electrode extends over a location of the balloon with the greatest linear dimension between outer surfaces of the balloon, the linear dimension measured orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the device.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of electrodes is axially aligned in a side view of the device, and wherein each of the plurality of electrodes has first and second sides, and wherein each of the first and second sides is parallel with the first or second side of an immediately adjacent one of the plurality of electrodes.

6. A cardiac tissue ablation device, comprising:

an inflatable and flexible balloon disposed at a distal region of an elongate member, the balloon having a toroidal or spherical configuration when inflated;

a plurality of flexible substrate branches adhered to an outer surface of the balloon along the length of the flexible substrate branch, the plurality of flexible substrate branches extending from a proximal region of the balloon to a distal region of the balloon;

a plurality of electrodes, each one carried by one of the plurality of flexible substrate branches, each of the plurality of electrodes flexible such that the electrode conforms to the curved configuration of the balloon when the balloon is inflated to the toroidal or spherical configuration, wherein each of the plurality of flexible substrate branches has a top surface and a bottom surface, and a plurality of holes each extending through the top and bottom surfaces, the plurality of holes located at a periphery of the respective flexible substrate branch adjacent an outer edge of the respective flexible substrate branch, wherein the plurality of holes do not extend through the balloon and do not extend through the electrode, wherein the plurality of holes have an adhesive therein,

wherein each of the plurality of electrodes has a proximal end and a distal end, and wherein each of the plurality of electrodes has a width that increases from the proximal end to a greatest width and then decreases from the greatest width to the distal end, wherein the decrease in width of the electrode from the greatest width to the distal end is more gradual than is the increase in the width from the proximal end to the greatest width, wherein a length of each of the plurality of electrodes from the greatest width to the distal end is greater than a length of the electrode from the proximal end to the greatest width, wherein each of the plurality of electrodes is axially aligned in a side view of the device, and wherein each of the plurality of electrodes has first and second sides, and wherein each of the first and second sides is parallel with the first or second side of an immediately adjacent one of the plurality of electrodes; and

a plurality of conductors, each one of which is in electrical communication with one of the plurality of electrodes.
