Abstract

The disclosure provides articles and methods useful for detecting a discrete source of DNase activity. DNase-producing microorganisms can be detected. The device can further include selective agents and/or indicators to differentiate groups or species microorganisms. Methods of use include detecting or enumerating DNase-producing microorganisms.

Claims (8)

1. A detection article, comprising:

a body member comprising a self-supporting, waterproof substrate having upper and lower surfaces;

wherein a dry coating comprising a cold water-soluble gelling agent and an indicator system is adhered uniformly onto a portion of at least one surface of the body member;

wherein the indicator system comprises DNA and methyl green; and

wherein, after contact with a predetermined volume of an aqueous liquid, the gelling agent forms a hydrogel and the concentration of methyl green in the hydrogel is about 5 μg/mL to about 20 μg/mL.

2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the coating further comprises a nutrient medium, an indicator, a selective agent, or any combination of two or more of the foregoing.

3. The article of claim 2 , wherein the selective agent selects for the growth of Staphylococcus aureus.

4. The article of claim 3 , wherein the selective agent is selected from the group consisting of cephalothin, cefazolin, cephradine, cephalexin, cefadroxil, cefamandole, cefoxitin, cefaclor, cefuroxime, cefuroxime axetil, loracarbef, cefonicid cefotetan, ceforanide, cefotaxime, cefpodoxime proxetil, ceftizoxime, cefixmeceftriaxone, cefoperazone, ceftazidime, moxlactam, cefepime, cefpirome, and oxacillin.
