Abstract

An expandable support device for tissue repair is disclosed. The device can be used to repair hard or soft tissue, such as bone or vertebral discs. A method of repairing tissue is also disclosed. The device and method can be used to treat compression fractures. The compression fractures can be in the spine. The device can be deployed by compressing the device longitudinally resulting in radial expansion.

Claims (41)

1. An expandable implant device comprising:

a body having a body longitudinal axis, a body first surface, and a body second surface, wherein the body first surface is opposite the body second surface, and wherein the body first surface and the body second surface have slopes at equal and opposite angles with respect to the body longitudinal axis;

a first external component having a first external component outer surface and a first external component inner surface, and wherein the first external component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body first surface, and wherein the first external component inner surface has a slope at an equal angle with respect to the body longitudinal axis as the angle of the body first surface with respect to the body longitudinal axis;

a second external component having a second external component outer surface and a second external component inner surface, and wherein the second external component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body second surface, and wherein the second external component inner surface has a slope at an equal angle with respect to the body longitudinal axis as the angle of the body second surface with respect to the body longitudinal axis;

wherein the expandable implant device has a first configuration and a second configuration, and wherein when the expandable implant device is in the first configuration and the expandable implant device is viewed in a transverse direction,

a first longitudinal end of the first external component outer surface is co-terminal with a first longitudinal end of the second external component outer surface in a longitudinal direction, and wherein a second longitudinal end of the first external component outer surface is co-terminal with a second longitudinal end of the second external component outer surface in the longitudinal direction, and

a first longitudinal end of the first external component inner surface is co-terminal with a first longitudinal end of the second external component inner surface in the longitudinal direction, and wherein a second longitudinal end of the first external component inner surface is co-terminal with a second longitudinal end of the second external component inner surface in the longitudinal direction; and

wherein when the expandable implant device is in the second configuration and the expandable implant device is viewed in the transverse direction,

the first longitudinal end of the first external component outer surface is co-terminal with the first longitudinal end of the second external component outer surface in the longitudinal direction, and wherein the second longitudinal end of the first external component outer surface is co-terminal with the second longitudinal end of the second external component outer surface in the longitudinal direction, and

the first longitudinal end of the first external component inner surface is co-terminal with the first longitudinal end of the second external component inner surface in the longitudinal direction, and wherein the second longitudinal end of the first external component inner surface is co-terminal with the second longitudinal end of the second external component inner surface in the longitudinal direction;

wherein the first external component outer surface has ridges that extend away from the body longitudinal axis, wherein the first external component inner surface is a portion of a tongue, wherein the body first surface is a portion of a groove, wherein the tongue is slidable in and attachably engageable with the groove, wherein the tongue has a smooth surface and a tongue longitudinal axis angled relative to the body longitudinal axis, wherein the groove has a smooth surface and a groove longitudinal axis angled relative to the body longitudinal axis, wherein the tongue and the groove permit relative longitudinal movement of the first external component and the body along the body longitudinal axis such that the first external component and the second external component are closer to the body longitudinal axis when the expandable implant device is in the first configuration than when the expandable implant device is in the second configuration, wherein the tongue and the groove restrict relative lateral movement of the first external component and the body along a lateral axis perpendicular to the body longitudinal axis, wherein the tongue and the groove restrict relative transverse movement of the first external component and the body along a transverse axis perpendicular to the groove longitudinal axis,

wherein when the expandable implant device is in the first configuration, the first external component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body first surface, wherein when the expandable implant device is in the first configuration, the second external component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body second surface,

wherein when the expandable implant device is in the second configuration, the first external component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body first surface, wherein when the expandable implant device is in the second configuration, the second external component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body second surface,

wherein the second configuration is an implantable configuration of the expandable implant device, wherein when the expandable implant device is in the second configuration, a longitudinal terminal end of the first external component is longitudinally offset from a longitudinal terminal end of the body, wherein when the expandable implant device is in the second configuration, a longitudinal terminal end of the second external component is longitudinally offset from the longitudinal terminal end of the body, and

wherein when the expandable implant device is in the implantable configuration, the tongue is slidable in the groove along the groove longitudinal axis.

2. The expandable implant device of claim 1 , wherein the first configuration is a height-contracted configuration, and wherein the second configuration is a height-expanded configuration.

3. The expandable implant device of claim 1 , wherein the first external component inner surface and the body first surface have a directionally locking interface.

4. The expandable implant device of claim 3 , wherein the first external component inner surface has first directional teeth, and wherein the body first surface has second directional teeth, and wherein the directionally locking interface comprises the first directional teeth and the second directional teeth.

5. The expandable implant device of claim 3 , wherein the second external component inner surface and the body second surface have a directionally locking interface.

6. The expandable implant device of claim 1 , wherein the expandable implant device has a different proximal terminal end when the expandable implant device is in the first configuration than when the expandable implant device is in the second configuration.

The expandable implant device of claim 1 , wherein when the expandable implant device is in the first configuration, the expandable implant device has a first proximal terminal end, and wherein when the expandable implant device is in the second configuration, the expandable implant device has a second proximal terminal end, and wherein the first proximal terminal end is different from the second proximal terminal end.

The expandable implant device of claim 1 , wherein when the expandable implant device is in the first configuration, the expandable implant device has a proximal terminal end at a first longitudinal position relative to the body longitudinal axis, wherein when the expandable implant device is in the second configuration, the proximal terminal end is at a second longitudinal position relative to the body longitudinal axis, and wherein the first longitudinal position is different from the second longitudinal position.

9. The expandable implant device of claim 1 , wherein the expandable implant device is longitudinally compressed in the first configuration when compared to the second configuration.

The expandable implant device of claim 1 , wherein the tongue and the groove extend longitudinally along the body longitudinal axis, wherein when the expandable implant device is in the first configuration, the expandable implant device is insertable in a target site, and wherein when the expandable implant device is in the first configuration, the expandable implant device is expandable from the first configuration to the second configuration.

11. The expandable implant device of claim 1 , wherein when the expandable implant device is in the first configuration, the expandable implant device is insertable in a target site, and wherein when the expandable implant device is in the first configuration, the expandable implant device is expandable from the first configuration to the second configuration.

12. An expandable implant device comprising:

a body having a body longitudinal axis, a body first surface, and a body second surface, wherein the body first surface is opposite the body second surface, and wherein the body first surface and the body second surface have slopes at equal and opposite angles with respect to the body longitudinal axis;

a first external component having a first external component outer surface and a first external component inner surface, and wherein the first external component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body first surface, and wherein the first external component inner surface has a slope at an equal angle with respect to the body longitudinal axis as the angle of the body first surface with respect to the body longitudinal axis;

a second external component having a second external component outer surface and a second external component inner surface, and wherein the second external component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body second surface, and wherein the second external component inner surface has a slope at an equal angle with respect to the body longitudinal axis as the angle of the body second surface with respect to the body longitudinal axis;

wherein the expandable implant device has a contracted configuration and an expanded configuration, wherein when the expandable implant device is in the contracted configuration and the expandable implant device is viewed in a transverse direction,

a first longitudinal end of the first external component outer surface is co-terminal with a first longitudinal end of the second external component outer surface in a longitudinal direction, and wherein a second longitudinal end of the first external component outer surface is co-terminal with a second longitudinal end of the second external component outer surface in the longitudinal direction, and

a first longitudinal end of the first external component inner surface is co-terminal with a first longitudinal end of the second external component inner surface in the longitudinal direction, and wherein a second longitudinal end of the first external component inner surface is co-terminal with a second longitudinal end of the second external component inner surface in the longitudinal direction; and

wherein when the expandable implant device is in the expanded configuration and the expandable implant device is viewed in the transverse direction,

the first longitudinal end of the first external component outer surface is co-terminal with the first longitudinal end of the second external component outer surface in the longitudinal direction, and wherein the second longitudinal end of the first external component outer surface is co-terminal with the second longitudinal end of the second external component outer surface in the longitudinal direction, and

the first longitudinal end of the first external component inner surface is co-terminal with the first longitudinal end of the second external component inner surface in the longitudinal direction, and wherein the second longitudinal end of the first external component inner surface is co-terminal with the second longitudinal end of the second external component inner surface in the longitudinal direction;

wherein the first external component inner surface is a portion of a tongue, wherein the body first surface is a portion of a groove, wherein the groove has a groove longitudinal axis angled relative to the body longitudinal axis, wherein the tongue is slidable in the groove, wherein the tongue and the groove permit relative longitudinal movement of the first external component and the body along the body longitudinal axis, wherein the tongue and the groove restrict relative lateral movement of the first external component and the body along a lateral axis perpendicular to the body longitudinal axis, wherein the tongue and the groove restrict relative transverse movement of the first external component and the body along a transverse axis perpendicular to the groove longitudinal axis, wherein a first portion of the groove is on a body first side and wherein a second portion of the groove is on a body second side,

wherein when the expandable implant device is in the contracted configuration, the first external component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body first surface, wherein when the expandable implant device is in the contracted configuration, the second external component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body second surface,

wherein when the expandable implant device is in the expanded configuration, the first external component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body first surface, wherein when the expandable implant device is in the expanded configuration, the second external component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body second surface, and

wherein the first external component and the second external component are closer to the body longitudinal axis when the expandable implant device is in the contracted configuration than when the expandable implant device is in the expanded configuration.

13. The expandable implant device of claim 12 , wherein the tongue has a tongue longitudinal axis angled relative to the body longitudinal axis, and wherein a first portion of the tongue is on a first external component first side and wherein a second portion of the tongue is on a first external component second side.

14. The expandable implant device of claim 13 , wherein when the expandable implant device is in the contracted configuration, the expandable implant device is insertable in a target site, and wherein when the expandable implant device is in the contracted configuration, the expandable implant device is expandable from the contracted configuration to the expanded configuration.
