Abstract

An expandable intervertebral implant is provided for insertion into an intervertebral space defined by adjacent vertebrae. The expandable intervertebral implant includes a pair of outer sleeve portions and an inner core disposed between the outer sleeve portions. Movement of the inner core relative to the outer sleeve portions causes the outers sleeve portions to deflect away from each other, thereby engaging the expandable intervertebral implant with the vertebrae and adjusting the height of the intervertebral space.

Claims (19)

1. A method of implanting an expandable intervertebral implant, the method comprising the steps of:

inserting the implant into an intervertebral space, such that an upper portion of the implant faces a superior vertebral body, and a lower portion of the implant faces an inferior vertebral body endplates, and a core is disposed between the superior and inferior endplates;

after the inserting step, actuating an actuation member, thereby causing 1) first and second sloped engagement surfaces of the core that are sloped in the same direction and longitudinally offset from each other in their respective entireties engage respective engagement surfaces of the upper portion, thereby urging the upper portion away from the lower portion, and 2) third and fourth sloped engagement surfaces of the core that are sloped in the same direction and longitudinally offset from each other in their respective entireties engage respective engagement surfaces of the lower portion, thereby urging the lower portion away from the upper portion, wherein the actuating step expands the intervertebral implant from an initial position to an expanded position whereby a distance between the upper portion and the lower portion is increased; and

causing the implant to remain in the expanded position under compressive forces while 1) the first and second sloped engagement surfaces is engaged with the engagement surface of the upper portion, and 2) the third and fourth sloped engagement surfaces is engaged with the engagement surface of the lower portion.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second sloped engagement surfaces are parallel to each other.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the third and fourth sloped engagement surfaces are parallel to each other.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a width of at least one of the upper portion and the lower portion defines a width of the intervertebral implant.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first, second, third, and fourth sloped engagement surfaces are disposed between the upper portion and the lower portion.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the actuating step comprises moving a biasing member that causes translational movement of the first, second, third, and fourth sloped engagement surfaces.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the upper portion defines a first opening, and the lower portion defines a second opening.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of causing 1) the first and second sloped engagement surfaces to remain engaged with the engagement surface of the upper portion when the implant is in a fully expanded position, and 2) the third and fourth sloped engagement surfaces to remain engaged with the engagement surfaces of the lower portion when the implant is in a fully expanded position.

9. The method of claim 1 , comprising causing a relative orientation between the upper and lower portions to remain constant during expansion of the implant.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant defines a height from an upwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface of the upper portion to a downwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface of the lower portion, and the intervertebral implant is designed such that when the intervertebral implant is in the initial position, the height is a minimum height such that the implant is unable to achieve a height less than the minimum height via movement of the first, second, third, and fourth engagement surfaces relative to the upper and lower portions.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of, when the expandable intervertebral implant is in the expanded position, preventing the upper and lower portions from moving toward each other in a direction from the expanded position to the initial position while (a) the first and second engagement surfaces in engagement with the engagement surface of the upper portion and (b) the third and fourth engagement surfaces are in engagement with the engagement surfaces of the lower portion.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second engagement surfaces are longitudinally aligned with each other, and the third and fourth engagement surfaces are longitudinally aligned with each other.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the actuating step causes an upwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface of the upper portion and a downwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface of the lower portion to define a lordotic profile when the implant is in the expanded position.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the actuating step causes 1) a first end of the upwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface to move away from the lower portion at a first rate, and 2) a second end of the upwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface to move away from the lower portion at a second rate greater than the first rate.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the actuating step causes 1) a first end of the downwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface to move away from the upper portion at a first rate, and 2) a second end of the downwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface to move away from the upper portion at a second rate greater than the first rate of the first end of the downwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the first ends of the upwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface and the downwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface, respectively, are aligned with each other, and the second ends of the upwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface and the downwardly-facing vertebral engagement surface, respectively, are aligned with each other.
