Abstract

A prosthesis has a tubular body having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending through the tubular body and open at each of the proximal end and the distal end. The tubular body defines a longitudinal axis and has a first width in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. The prosthesis also includes a first flange at one of the proximal end and the distal end with the lumen extending through the first flange. The first flange has a second width in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis that is greater than the first width. The tubular body and the first flange form a structurally self-supporting, body compatible, and body absorbable device. The device is formed of a composite structure and is adapted for insertion into an opening through a tympanic membrane.

Claims (16)

1. A tympanic membrane prosthesis comprising:

a tubular body having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending through the tubular body and open at each of the proximal end and the distal end, wherein the tubular body defines a longitudinal axis and has a first width in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis; and

a first flange at one of the proximal end and the distal end, the lumen extending through the first flange, the first flange having a second width in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the second width being greater than the first width,

wherein the tubular body and the first flange form a structurally self-supporting, body compatible, and body absorbable device, the device being formed of a composite structure that includes an inner portion having an inside surface material that forms the lumen extending through the tubular body and an outer portion having an outside surface material, the inner portion having a first resorption rate that is different than a second resorption rate of the outer portion such that the tubular body has a variable resorption rate along the first width, the outside surface material adapted to produce an inflammatory reaction in adjacent tissue at a tympanic membrane, and the device being adapted for insertion into an opening through the tympanic membrane for placement with the proximal end and the distal end disposed on opposite sides of the tympanic membrane.

2. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the device is further adapted to maintain patency of the lumen following said insertion and placement.

3. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the inner portion includes an inner layer and the outer portion includes an outer layer, and wherein the outer layer is positioned so as to contact the tympanic membrane when the device is placed.

4. The prosthesis of claim 3 , wherein the lumen comprises a uniform diameter extending through the tubular body and the first flange along the longitudinal axis.

5. The prosthesis of claim 3 , wherein the first width comprises an inner layer width of the inner layer and an outer layer width of the outer layer, and wherein the inner layer width differs from the outer layer width.

6. The prosthesis of claim 5 , wherein the inner layer and the outer layer are coaxial along the longitudinal axis such that the outer layer surrounds the inner layer.

7. The prosthesis of claim 3 , wherein the device incorporates denatured gelatin sponge material in one of the inner layer and the outer layer.

8. The prosthesis of claim 3 , wherein the tubular body has a first length in a direction along the longitudinal axis and the first flange has a second length in the direction along the longitudinal axis, the second length being less than the first length.

9. The prosthesis of claim 3 , wherein the inner layer has a first porosity and the outer layer has a second porosity, the first porosity being different from the second porosity.

10. The prosthesis of claim 3 , further comprising:

a second flange at the other of the proximal end and the distal end, the lumen extending through the second flange, the second flange having the second width in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

11. The prosthesis of claim 10 , wherein the inner layer forms the lumen extending through the tubular body, and wherein the outer layer forms the lumen extending through the first flange and the second flange.

12. The prosthesis of claim 10 , wherein the lumen extends along the longitudinal axis and comprises a uniform diameter extending through the tubular body, the first flange, and the second flange.
