Abstract

The present invention is directed to differing embodiments of safety trailers, which have first and second platforms and a safety wall positioned therebetween. The platforms and safety wall define an area protected from vehicular incursions.

Claims (30)

1. A safety trailer comprising:

first and second platforms, at least one of the first and second platforms provided with a set of wheels;

a rotatably positionable safety wall, said safety wall comprising first and second V-shaped rotatable arms, each of the first and second rotatable arms connected to a first and second pivot respectively, and each of the first and second rotatable arms having a traffic incursion facing panel;

wherein the first and second pivots of the first and second rotatable arms lie along a common axis of rotation, and wherein said common axis of rotation is a longitudinal axis of the safety trailer; and

wherein each of the first and second platforms include a ballast that is movably positionable between opposing first and second sides of the safety trailer via rails, and wherein the ballast is positioned on the opposite side of the safety trailer from the deployed safety wall.

2. The safety trailer of claim 1 , wherein a width of the safety wall is preferably within about 25% of, more preferably within about 10% of, and most preferably substantially the same as, a width of the bed of the safety trailer.

3. The safety trailer of claim 2 , wherein the width of the bed of the safety trailer preferably is at least about 4 feet, more preferably at least about 6 feet and most preferably ranges from about 6 to about 12 feet.

4. The safety trailer of claim 1 , wherein the traffic incursion facing panel has multiple horizontal and/or vertical tiers of supporting structural members supporting an outer skin.

5. The safety trailer of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of structural members define a two-dimensional matrix having multiple columns and rows of members supporting the outer skin.

6. The safety trailer of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of structural members are spaced apart and arranged in a single row supporting the outer skin.

7. The safety trailer of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of structural members are interconnected and arranged in a single row supporting the outer skin.

8. The safety trailer of claim 4 , wherein the traffic incursion facing panel further includes force channeling members and an interior skin to dissipate any impacting force applied to the outer skin.

9. The safety trailer of claim 8 , wherein the force channeling members are gussets that direct some of the impacting force to the structural members and the interior skin.

10. The safety trailer of claim 4 , wherein an edge of the traffic incursion facing panel is beveled to reduce the likelihood of the edge becoming snagged on an impacting vehicle.

11. The safety trailer of claim 1 , wherein the traffic incursion facing panel has a planar face that faces vehicular traffic.

12. The safety trailer of claim 1 , wherein the safety wall rotates to both sides of the safety trailer for deployment, depending on the orientation of the safety trailer relative to vehicular traffic.

13. The safety trailer of claim 1 , wherein the first and second platforms are provided with at least one set of holes to secure the safety wall in a deployed position.

14. The safety trailer of claim 13 , wherein the safety wall is secured in the deployed position by dowels placed in the at least one set of holes in the first and second platforms.

15. The safety trailer of claim 1 , wherein the safety wall may be carried in an undeployed position between the first and second platforms and in axial alignment with the first and second platforms.

16. The safety trailer of claim 1 , wherein the first and second platforms each include protruding supports to support the safety wall when in an undeployed position.

17. The safety trailer of claim 1 , wherein the safety wall has a rectangularly-shaped cross-section.

18. A method comprising:

providing first and second platforms, at least one of the first and second platforms provided with a set of wheels;

providing a rotatably positionable safety wall, said safety wall comprising first and second V-shaped rotatable arms, each of the first and second rotatable arms connected to a first and second pivot respectively, and each of the first and second rotatable arms having a traffic incursion facing panel;

wherein the first and second pivots of the first and second rotatable arms lie along a common axis of rotation, and wherein said common axis of rotation is a longitudinal axis of the safety trailer; and

providing each of the first and second platforms with a ballast that is movably positionable between opposing first and second sides of a safety trailer via rails, and

moving the ballast to the opposite side of the safety trailer from the safety wall, when the safety wall is deployed.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising rotating the safety wall to both sides of the safety trailer for deployment, depending on the orientation of the safety trailer relative to vehicular traffic.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the safety wall is carried in an undeployed position between the first and second platforms and in axial alignment with the first and second platforms.

21. The method of claim 18 , further comprising providing the first and second platforms with at least one set of holes and securing the safety wall in the deployed position by dowels placed in the at least one set of holes in the first and second platforms.
