Abstract

The invention relates generally to liquids such as mouth rinses for the prevention and elimination of bad breath as well as for the reduction of oral microorganisms responsible for the development of dental plaque and tooth decay. In particular, the present invention relates to a method of preparing non-alcohol or reduced alcohol mouth rinses effective at preventing the above-mentioned problems.

Claims (25)

1. A composition comprising:

a. polyol solvent selected from the group consisting of polyhydric alkanes, polyhydric alkane esters, polyalkene glycols, and mixtures thereof;

b. sugar alcohol solvent selected from the group consisting of sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol, maltitol, inositol, allitol, altritol, dulcitol, galactitol, glucitol, hexitol, iditol, pentitol, ribitol, erythritol, and mixtures thereof;

c. surfactant selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants and mixtures thereof;

d. organic acid selected from the group consisting of benzoic acid, sorbic acid, succinic acid, citric acid, and mixtures thereof;

e. one or more antimicrobial essential oils; and

f. water;

wherein said composition is free of C 2 -C 4 monohydric alcohols, the ratio of the sugar alcohol to the total polyol solvent component in the composition is from 5:1 to 1:5, and the composition in the form of a liquid concentrate to which water may be added to achieve a composition having said sugar alcohol solvent in an amount of from 2.5 w/v % to 17% w/v of the composition, and a total amount of all polyol solvents and sugar alcohol solvents that does not exceed 20% w/v of the composition.

2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyol solvent comprises propylene glycol.

3. The composition of claim 1 wherein said sugar alcohol solvent comprises sorbitol.

4. The composition of claim 1 wherein said surfactant comprises sodium lauryl sulfate.

5. The composition of claim 1 wherein said surfactant comprises a Poloxamer surfactant.

6. The composition of claim 1 wherein said organic acid comprises benzoic acid.

7. The composition of claim 1 wherein said one or more antimicrobial essential oils are selected from the group consisting of menthol, thymol, eucalyptol, methyl salicylate and combinations of two or more thereof.

8. The composition of claim 1 comprising propylene glycol, sorbitol, and Poloxamer 407.

9. The composition of claim 8 further comprising sodium lauryl sulfate.

10. The composition of claim 9 wherein said one or more antimicrobial essential oils are selected from the group consisting of menthol, thymol, eucalyptol, methyl salicylate and combinations of two or more thereof.

11. A method of making a mouth rinse composition comprising adding water to a composition comprising polyol solvent, sugar alcohol solvent, surfactant, organic acid, one or more antimicrobial essential oils, and water in liquid concentrate form in an amount sufficient to achieve a mouth rinse composition comprising:

a. from about 1 to about 15 w/v % of polyol solvent selected from the group consisting of polyhydric alkanes, polyhydric alkane esters, polyalkene glycols, and mixtures thereof;

b. from about 2.5 to about 17 w/v % of sugar alcohol solvent selected from the group consisting of sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol, maltitol, inositol, allitol, altritol, dulcitol, galactitol, glucitol, hexitol, iditol, pentitol, ribitol, erythritol, and mixtures thereof;

c. less than 2 w/v % of surfactants selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants and mixtures thereof;

d. from about 0.001 to about 1 w/v % of organic acid selected from the group consisting of benzoic acid, sorbic acid, succinic acid, citric acid, and mixtures thereof;

e. one or more antimicrobial essential oils; and

f. water;

wherein said total amount of polyol and sugar alcohol solvents does not exceed 20 v/v % of the composition.
