Abstract

Techniques for treating a tumor and vaccinating against cancer are described. The techniques include treating the tumor by positioning electrodes over an interface between the tumor and non-tumor tissue and applying sub-microsecond pulsed electric fields. The positioning is facilitated by an imaginary contour line of a threshold value of the electric field. In an example, the imaginary contour line is overlaid over images that include the tumor such that the electrodes are properly positioned over the tumor. The techniques also include vaccinating against cancer by passing sub-microsecond pulsed electric fields through tumor cells of a subject sufficient to cause the tumor cells to express calreticulin on surface membranes. The tumor cells are extracted and introduced with the expressed calreticulin into the subject or another subject, thereby providing a vaccination.

Claims (47)

8. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the feedback further comprises a presentation of instructions for aligning the imaginary contour line and the boundary.

9. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the computing system is further configured to detect the boundary based on an application of edge detection to the true image and on fluorescent labeling of the tumorous area.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

a pulse generator; and

a delivery device coupled with the pulse generator and comprising the set of electrodes and the camera device.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the imaginary contour line is generated based on a model of the electric field available from a storage.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the computing system is further configured to select the model from models of the electric field available from the storage, and wherein the model is selected based on one or more of: a configuration of the set of electrodes, a type of the tumor, a size of the tumor, a setting of the electric field, or an application environment.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 further comprising a pulse generator communicatively coupled with the computing system, wherein the setting of the electric field is available based on electrical data of the pulse generator.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the type and size of the tumor are available based on an operator input at the computing system, and wherein the computing system is further configured to select the setting of the electric field based on the model and the operator input and to control pulses generated by the pulse generator based on the setting of the electric field.
