Abstract

Introducing ultraviolet (UV) light to interior portions of footwear alters the environment inside a shoe or other footwear to destroy microorganisms or inhibit their growth. Visible light can also be used to prevent further microorganism growth. Introducing forced air flow through the footwear removes dampness in and thereby deodorizes the footwear. A preferred embodiment comprises an adjustable shoe tree equipped with a UV germicidal light source and electronic safeguards that prevent appreciable leakage of UV radiation outside the shoe.

Claims (29)

1. Apparatus for sanitizing human footwear having an opening in which a person's foot is inserted to put on the footwear, comprising:

a light source operable to receive power from a power source, the light source having a top, a front end, and side surfaces, and the power source delivering electrical power to activate the light source and thereby emit radiation in a wavelength range that sanitizes the footwear by inhibiting growth of or destroying microorganisms present in an interior region of the footwear;

a support for the light source to set it in a sanitization position to direct the radiation to the interior region of the footwear;

a frame operatively connected to the support and including a forepart, the forepart positioned over the top and extending below the front end and side surfaces of the light source to restrict it from coming in direct contact with the footwear but allow the radiation emitted from the light source to propagate onto the interior region of the footwear; and

a control switch operatively connected to the power source to enable or disable application of power to the light source, the control switch providing operational mode selection that allows a user to select an activation cycle of the apparatus.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , in which the human footwear includes a shoe.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , in which the light source emits ultraviolet (UV) light.

4. The light source of claim 3 , in which UV light has a peak wavelength of between about 180 nm and about 280 nm.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , in which the light source includes a light-emitting diode (LED).

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , in which the light source is accessible for replacement.

The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a light sensitive chemical compound that is reactive to the radiation emitted from the light source, the light sensitive chemical compound applied to surfaces of the interior region of the footwear and, upon exposure to the radiation emitted from the light source, imparting volatility to microorganisms present in the interior region of the footwear.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , in which the light sensitive chemical composition is titanium dioxide.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , in which the frame is a solid material that allows transmission of the radiation emitted from the light source.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , in which the frame is constructed to function as a light pipe.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a flexible cover for placement over the footwear so as to limit outside exposure to radiation escaping from the footwear interior region.

12. Apparatus for sanitizing human footwear having an opening in which a person's foot is inserted to put on the footwear, comprising:

a light source operable to receive power from a power source, the light source having a top, a front end, and side surfaces, and the power source delivering electrical power to activate the light source and thereby emit radiation;

a support for the light source to set it in a sanitization position to direct the radiation to an interior region of the footwear;

a frame operatively connected to the support for the light source and including a forepart, the forepart positioned over the top and extending below the front end and side surfaces of the light source to restrict it from coming in direct contact with the footwear but allow the radiation emitted from the light source to propagate onto the interior region of the footwear;

a control switch operatively connected to the power source to enable or disable application of power to the light source, the control switch providing operational mode selection that allows a user to select an activation cycle of the apparatus; and

a light sensitive chemical compound that is reactive to the radiation emitted from the light source, the light sensitive chemical compound applied to surfaces of the interior region of the footwear and, upon exposure to the radiation emitted from the light source, imparting volatility to microorganisms present in the interior region of the footwear.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , in which the human footwear includes a shoe.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , in which the light source emits ultraviolet (UV) light.

15. The apparatus of claim 12 , in which the light source emits visible light.

16. The apparatus of claim 12 , in which the light source is accessible for replacement.

17. The apparatus of claim 12 , in which the power source is replaceable.

18. The apparatus of claim 12 , in which the frame is a solid material that allows transmission of the radiation emitted from the light source.

19. The apparatus of claim 12 , in which the light sensitive chemical composition is titanium dioxide.

20. The apparatus of claim 12 , further comprising a flexible cover for placement over the footwear so as to limit outside exposure to radiation escaping from the interior region of the footwear.
