Abstract

A spinal surgery retractor and method of use. The retractor includes a slotted keyway for integrating a keyed spinal distractor. The retractor and distractor combination slide together to displace a portion of the intervertebral disk space to restore or maintain intervertebral spacing and facilitate retraction of surrounding soft tissues while disk space surgery is performed. The distractor head and mating portion of the retractors have matching profiles that enable the retractor to maintain distraction of the vertebra after removal of the distractor portion of the tool, permitting access to increase at the operating site.

Claims (28)

1. A surgical method comprising:

removing a portion of a disc from a disc space in a patient via an anterior approach;

performing a surgical distraction on vertebrae adjacent the disc space by inserting a combined distractor and retractor assembly in the disc space, wherein the combined distractor and retractor assembly comprises a distractor portion that is mated to a retractor portion; and

removing the distractor portion from the disc space while keeping the retractor portion in the disc space;

wherein the retractor portion is planar.

2. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the retractor portion comprises a keyway.

3. The surgical method of claim 2 , wherein the distractor portion comprises a keyed face that is capable of sliding into the keyway of the retractor portion.

4. The surgical method of claim 2 , wherein the keyway transitions into a slot.

5. The surgical method of claim 4 , wherein the keyway and slot are positioned along a midline of the retractor portion.

6. The surgical method of claim 5 , wherein the retractor portion comprises at least one convex surface offset from the midline of the retractor portion.

7. The surgical method of claim 6 , wherein the retractor portion comprises a pair of convex surfaces offset from the midline of the retractor portion.

8. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the disc space is a lumbar region of the patient.

9. The surgical method of claim 1 , further comprising inserting a second distractor portion into the retractor portion.

10. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein the distractor portion comprises a distractor head fastened together with a distractor rod.

11. A surgical method comprising:

removing a portion of a lumbar disc from a disc space in a patient;

performing a surgical distraction on vertebrae adjacent the disc space by inserting a combined distractor and retractor assembly in the disc space, wherein the combined distractor and retractor assembly comprises a distractor portion that is mated to a retractor portion; and

removing the distractor portion from the disc space while keeping the retractor portion in the disc space;

wherein the retractor portion is planar.

12. The surgical method of claim 11 , wherein the retractor portion comprises a keyway.

13. The surgical method of claim 12 , wherein the distractor portion comprises a keyed face that is capable of sliding into the keyway of the retractor portion.

14. The surgical method of claim 12 , wherein the keyway transitions into a slot.

15. The surgical method of claim 14 , wherein the keyway and slot are positioned along a midline of the retractor portion.

16. The surgical method of claim 15 , wherein the retractor portion comprises at least one convex surface offset from the midline of the retractor portion.

17. The surgical method of claim 16 , wherein the retractor portion comprises a pair of convex surfaces offset from the midline of the retractor portion.

18. The surgical method of claim 11 , wherein the retractor portion is flexible.

19. The surgical method of claim 11 , further comprising inserting a second distractor portion into the retractor portion.

20. The surgical method of claim 11 , wherein the distractor portion comprises a distractor head fastened together with a distractor rod.
