Abstract

A visual display unit creating a three-dimensional volumetric space. The display includes a first screen in a first focal plane, wherein the first screen displays a first image. The display includes a second screen in a second focal plane distinct from the first focal plane, wherein the second screen displays a second image, and wherein the second screen at least partially overlaps the first screen. The display includes a physical object located between the first screen and said second screen, wherein at least one of the first and second images is displayed in response to a placement of the physical object.

Claims (12)

1. A display system comprising:

a first display screen in a first plane, wherein said first screen is configured to display a first image;

a second display screen in a second plane different than said first plane, wherein said second display screen is configured to display a second image, and wherein said second display screen at least partially overlaps said first display screen;

a physical object located between said first display screen and said second display screen, wherein at least one of said first and second display screens is configured to display an image related to said physical object; and

an emissive layer comprising a sheet provided between said first display screen and said second display screen and configured to illuminate the first and second display screens to allow the first and second display screens to display images and to provide light to said first display screen and said physical object, and wherein said emissive layer is configured to refract light at a peripheral border so that the peripheral border between the first and second display screens is not visible to a viewer.

2. The display of claim 1 , wherein the emissive layer is a light guide.

3. The display of claim 1 , wherein said first screen is configured to display the first image in response to movement of said physical object.

4. The display of claim 1 , wherein the physical object is configured to move in response to at least one of the first image and the second image.

5. The display of claim 1 , wherein said physical object comprises a sphere.

6. The display of claim 1 , wherein said physical object comprises a needle.

7. The display of claim 1 , wherein the emissive layer comprise a TOLED.

8. The display of claim 1 , wherein the first and second display screens comprise respective liquid crystal displays.
