Abstract

A catheter insertion device includes a housing, a needle, a catheter, and a guide wire. The needle has a proximal end positioned in the housing and a distal end extending beyond a distal end of the housing. The catheter is positioned coaxially over the needle, and includes a flexible tube and a catheter hub on a proximal end of the flexible tube. A proximal portion of the flexible tube and the catheter hub are positioned in the housing. The guide wire has a proximal end positioned in the housing and a distal end positioned in a lumen of the needle. The catheter insertion device also includes a handle coupled to the catheter, wherein movement of the handle relative to the housing moves the catheter hub from a position in the housing to a position outside of the housing.

Claims (13)

1. A catheter insertion device, comprising:

a housing;

a needle having a proximal end positioned in the housing and a distal end extending beyond a distal end of the housing;

a catheter positioned coaxially over the needle, the catheter having a proximal portion including a catheter hub, the proximal portion positioned in the housing in a first position;

a guide wire including a proximal end positioned in the housing and a distal end positioned in a lumen of the needle; and

a handle coupled to the catheter hub, wherein the handle is designed to enable movement of the catheter from the first position to a second position with respect to the housing, the proximal portion of the catheter positioned outside of the housing in the second position.

2. The catheter insertion device according to claim 1 , further comprising a guide wire advancement member, wherein movement of the guide wire advancement member moves the guide wire relative to the needle.

3. The catheter insertion device according to claim 2 , wherein the guide wire advancement member includes a guide wire carrier associated with the guide wire in the housing.

4. The catheter insertion device according to claim 2 , wherein movement of the guide wire advancement member is initiated by a user.

5. The catheter insertion device according to claim 1 , wherein the guide wire distal end comprises a coiled tip.

6. The catheter insertion device according to claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the catheter extends beyond a distal end of the housing in the first position.

7. The catheter insertion device according to claim 1 , wherein movement of the handle is initiated by a user.

8. The catheter insertion device according to claim 1 , wherein the catheter hub comprises a seal.
