Abstract

Systems and methods for managing temperatures of wearable device components are disclosed. In one aspects, a method includes determining a temperature of an electronic component of the wearable device, determining a rate of temperature change of the electronic component, and determining whether to increase or decrease a transmission rate limit of the electronic component based on the temperature and the rate, adjusting the transmission rate limit based on the determination, and limiting a rate of transmission of the electronic component based on the adjusted transmission rate limit.

Claims (50)

1. A wearable electronic device, comprising:

glasses;

a camera;

a wireless transmitter;

a computer, the computer configured to:

capture an image using the camera;

transmit the image using the wireless transmitter at a transmission rate less than a transmission rate limit of the wireless transmitter;

first determine a temperature of the wireless transmitter while transmitting the image;

second determine a rate of temperature change based on the determined temperature;

third determine whether to increase or decrease the transmission rate limit of the wireless transmitter based on the temperature and the rate of temperature change;

adjust the transmission rate limit of the wireless transmitter based on the third determination; and

transmit using the wireless transmitter at a second transmission rate less than the adjusted transmission rate limit of the wireless transmitter.

2. The wearable electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the computer is further configured to:

determine whether the temperature of the wireless transmitter is within a first temperature range or an adjacent second temperature range; and

adjust the transmission rate limit based on the determination.

3. The wearable electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the computer is further configured to read data indicating temperature of the wireless transmitter from the wireless transmitter, and determine the temperature of the wirelss transmitter based on the data read from the wireless transmitter.

4. The wearable electronic device of claim 1 , further comprising a temperature sensor, wherein the computer is further configured to read data from the temperature sensor, and determine the temperature of the wireless transmitter based on the data read from the temperature sensor.

5. The wearable electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the computer is further configured to:

compare the rate of temperature change to a first rate threshold or a second rate threshold in response to the temperature falling within the first temperature range or the second temperature range respectively; and

adjust the transmission rate limit in response to the comparison.

6. The wearable electronic device of claim 5 , wherein the computer is further configured to increase the transmission rate limit in response to the rate of temperature change exceeding the respective threshold and decreasing the transmission rate limit otherwise.

7. The wearable electronic device of claim 6 , wherein the computer is further configured to increase or decrease the transmission rate limit by 2 Mbit/sec.

8. The wearable electronic device of claim 5 , wherein the first rate threshold is 15 degrees Celsius per minute, and the second rate threshold is 10 degrees Celsius per minute.

9. The wearable electronic device of claim 8 , wherein the first temperature range is 0° C. and 20° C. and the second temperature range is 21° C. to 49° C.

10. The wearable electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the computer is further configured to:

determine which one of the adjacent temperature ranges the temperature of the wireless transmitter is within; and

adjust the transmission rate limit based on the determined one temperature range.

11. The wearable electronic device of claim 1 , wherein limiting the rate of transmission of the wireless transmitter based on the adjusted transmission rate limit comprises delaying transmissions to avoid exceeding the transmission rate limit.

12. The wearable electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transmitter is a Bluetooth low energy component.

13. The wearable electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transmitter is a WiFi device.

14. The wearable electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the computer is further configured to:

determine a prospective completion time for transmission of the image;

defer limiting of the transmission rate in response to the prospective completion time meeting a criterion.

15. The wearable electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the image is included in a video file or an image file.

16. A method of managing temperature of a wireless transmitter in a wearable device including a camera, a wireless transmitter, and a computer, comprising:

capturing, via the computer, an image using the camera;

transmitting, via the computer, the image using the wireless transmitter at a transmission rate less than a transmission rate limit of the wireless transmitter;

first determining, via the computer, a temperature of the wireless transmitter while transmitting the image;

second determining, via the computer, a rate of temperature change based on the determined temperature;

third determining, via the computer, whether to increase or decrease the transmission rate limit of the wireless transmitter based on the temperature and the rate of temperature change;

adjusting, via the computer, the transmission rate limit of the wireless transmitter based on the third determination; and

transmitting, using the wireless transmitter, at a second transmission rate less than the adjusted transmission rate limit of the wireless transmitter.

17. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that when executed cause a computer to perform a method of managing temperature of a wireless transmitter in a wearable device including a camera, the method comprising:

capturing, via the computer, an image using the camera;

transmit, via the computer, the image using the wireless transmitter at a transmission rate less than a transmission rate limit of the wireless transmitter;

first determine, via the computer, a temperature of the wireless transmitter while transmitting the image;

second determine, via the computer, a rate of temperature change based on the determined temperature;

third determine, via the computer, whether to increase or decrease the transmission rate limit of the wireless transmitter based on the temperature and the rate of temperature change;
