Abstract

Equipment, systems, processes and techniques for conducting processing of solutions are described. The techniques can be applied to provide diluted solution (i.e. purified solvent), concentrate solution or each. A variety of specific equipment, example systems and processes are depicted and described.

Claims (39)

1. A process for processing a solution; the process comprising:

with a reverse osmosis system including at least:

(i) a first reverse osmosis unit positioned to receive solution to be processed; the first reverse osmosis unit including: a high pressure side inlet; a high pressure side outlet; a low pressure side inlet; and a low pressure side outlet;

(ii) a concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit; the concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit including: a high pressure side inlet; a high pressure side outlet; a low pressure side inlet; and a low pressure side outlet; and,

(iii) an intermediate reverse osmosis unit system including at least one intermediate reverse osmosis unit, each intermediate reverse osmosis unit in the intermediate reverse osmosis unit system having: a high pressure side inlet; a high pressure side outlet; a low pressure side inlet; and a low pressure side outlet;

operating the reverse osmosis unit system such that:

(i) solution is directed into the first reverse osmosis unit with splitting of the solution and directing a portion of the solution into each of the high pressure side inlet and low pressure side inlet of the first reverse osmosis unit;

(ii) an outlet flow from the first reverse osmosis unit is directed into a reverse osmosis unit of the intermediate reverse osmosis unit system; and,

(iii) an outlet flow from a reverse osmosis unit of the intermediate osmosis unit system is directed into both the high pressure side inlet and low pressure side inlet of the final concentrate-generating reverse osmosis unit.

2. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the intermediate reverse osmosis unit system includes a plurality of reverse osmosis units in series.

3. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the outlet flow from a reverse osmosis unit of the intermediate reverse osmosis unit, that is directed into both the high pressure side inlet and low pressure side inlet of the final concentrate-generating reverse osmosis unit, is a low pressure outlet flow.

4. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the outlet flow from a reverse osmosis unit of the intermediate reverse osmosis unit, that is directed into both the high pressure side inlet and low pressure side inlet of the final concentrate-generating reverse osmosis unit, is a high pressure outlet flow.

5. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the first reverse osmosis unit is operated with the same solution entering the high pressure side inlet and low pressure side inlet.

6. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) after the solution directed in the first reverse osmosis unit is split, at least one of two resulting streams is modified in content before being directed into the first reverse osmosis unit.

7. A process according to claim 6 wherein:

(a) after the solution directed in the first reverse osmosis unit is split, a resulting stream directed into the low pressure side inlet of the first reverse osmosis unit is modified.

8. A process according to claim 5 wherein:

(a) the first reverse osmosis unit is operated such that inlet flow to the high pressure side inlet of the first reverse osmosis unit is directed through the first reverse osmosis unit in a direction countercurrent to a direction of flow into the low pressure side inlet and through the first reverse osmosis unit.

9. A process according to claim 8 wherein:

(a) the reverse osmosis unit is operated such that inlet flow to the high pressure side inlet of the concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit is directed through the concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit in a direction countercurrent to a direction flow into the low pressure side inlet and through the concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit.

10. A process according to claim 9 wherein:

(a) the reverse osmosis unit is operated such that inlet flow to the high pressure side inlet of the selected unit of the intermediate reverse osmosis unit system is directed through the selected unit of the intermediate reverse osmosis unit system in a direction countercurrent to flow into the low pressure side inlet and through the selected unit of the intermediate reverse osmosis unit system.

11. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the intermediate reverse osmosis unit system includes multiple reverse osmosis units.

12. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the solution directed into the first reverse osmosis unit includes outlet flow from at least one other reverse osmosis unit in the reverse osmosis system.

13. A process according to claim 12 wherein:

(a) the solution directed into the first reverse osmosis unit includes outlet flow from multiple reverse osmosis units in the reverse osmosis system.

14. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) a high pressure side inlet feed and a low pressure side inlet feed, to at least one selected reverse osmosis unit, in the intermediate reverse osmosis unit system, differ in solute concentration by no more than 20%.

15. A process according to claim 14 wherein:

(a) a high pressure side inlet feed and a low pressure side inlet feed, to at least one selected reverse osmosis unit, in the intermediate reverse osmosis unit system, have the same solute concentration.

16. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) each reverse osmosis unit in the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system is operated with a solute concentration in the high pressure side inlet feed thereto within 20% of a solute concentration in a low pressure side inlet feed thereto.
