Bluff body fuel mixer
A fuel injection system may comprise a mixer and a fuel injector disposed within the mixer. The mixer may comprise an outer housing with an exit port and a bluff body extending across the exit port of the outer housing. A flared surface of the mixer may match a contour of the bluff body.
1. A fuel and air mixer, comprising:
an outer housing; and
a bluff body extending across an exit port of the fuel and air mixer, wherein the bluff body extends between a first point on an inner surface of the fuel and air mixer and a second point on the inner surface, the second point being oriented towards the first point and located 180° about the inner surface from the first point and wherein the fuel and air mixer comprises a flared wall formed by the inner surface of the fuel and air mixer proximate the exit port, the flared wall being defined by a diameter of the fuel and air mixer increasing toward the exit port, the diameter of the fuel and air mixer being measured at the inner surface, and wherein a first angle formed by the flared wall and a horizontal plane is equal to a second angle formed by a surface of the bluff body and the horizontal plane.
2. The fuel and air mixer of claim 1 , comprising a turbulator disposed in the outer housing.
3. The fuel and air mixer of claim 1 , wherein the bluff body comprises a v-shaped gutter.
4. The fuel and air mixer of claim 3 , wherein the outer housing has a cylindrical geometry.
5. The fuel and air mixer of claim 4 , wherein a ratio of an outlet radius (R 1 ) of the fuel and aft mixer, as measured at the exit port of the fuel and air mixer, and an inlet radius (R 2 ) of The fuel and air mixer, as measured at an apex of the v-shaped gutter, ranges from 1.1 to 1.6.
6. The fuel and air mixer of claim 5 , wherein the v-shaped gutter comprises a width (W 1 ), and wherein W 1 /R 1 ranges from 0.2 to 0.45.
7. A fuel injection system, comprising:
a mixer;
a bluff body at an exit port of the mixer, wherein the bluff body extends between a first point on an inner surface of the mixer and a second point on the inner surface of the mixer, the second point being oriented toward the first point and located 180° about the inner surface of the mixer from the first point, and wherein the mixer comprises a flared wall formed by the inner surface proximate the exit port, the flared wall being defined by a diameter of the mixer increasing toward the exit port, the diameter of the mixer being measured at the inner surface, and wherein a first angle formed by the flared wall and a horizontal plane is equal to a second angle formed by a surface of the bluff body and the horizontal plane; and
a fuel injector disposed within the mixer.
8. The fuel injection system of claim 7 , further comprising a turbulator disposed in the mixer.
9. The fuel injection system of claim 7 , wherein the bluff body comprises a gutter.
