Abstract

The present invention relates to purified 3-methanesulfonylpropionitrile or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and a method for preparing such compound. The compound has at least 90% (w/w) purity. The present invention is also directed to a pharmaceutical composition comprises the purified compound and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The present invention is further directed to a method for treating inflammation, inflammatory-related disorders, or pain, by administering 3-methanesulfonylpropionitrile or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or solvate thereof to a subject in need thereof.

Claims (8)

1. A method of reducing or alleviating symptoms of localized manifestation of inflammation, comprising the steps of:

identifying a subject suffering from localized manifestation of inflammation, and

administering to the subject a compound of 3-methanesulfonylpropionitrile, or a pharmaceutically acceptable solvate thereof, in an amount effective to treat the localized manifestations of inflammation, wherein localized manifestation of inflammation is characterized by acute or chronic swelling, pain, redness, or increased temperature.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said localized manifestation of inflammation is characterized by redness.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said localized manifestation of inflammation is characterized by increased temperature.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said compound is orally administered.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said compound is topically administered.

6. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and 3-methanesulfonylpropionitrile or a pharmaceutically acceptable solvate thereof, wherein the composition is in an oral form of a tablet, and the pharmaceutically acceptable carrier is selected from the group consisting of: carboxymethylcellulose, cellulose, ethylcellulose, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, methylcellulose, karaya gum, starch, starch and tragacanth gum, poly(acrylic acid), and polyvinylpyrrolidone.
