Abstract

Disclosed herein is an information processing apparatus, including: an image acceptance section configured to accept an image of an operation inputting apparatus picked up by an imaging section; an operation signal acceptance section configured to accept an operation signal representative of an operation for the operation inputting apparatus from the operation inputting apparatus; and a process execution section configured to execute a process in response to the position of the operation inputting apparatus in the image accepted by the image acceptance section and the operation signal accepted by the operation signal acceptance section.

Claims (44)

1. An information processing apparatus, comprising:

an image acceptance circuit operating to accept a picked-up image of a plurality of operation inputting apparatuses, for each of a plurality of users, picked up by an imaging circuit;

an operation signal acceptance circuit operating to accept respective operation signals from the plurality of users associated with respective identification information from each of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses, and representative of respective operations from the plurality of different operation inputting apparatuses; and

a process execution circuit operating to:

(i) produce a play image for display on a display unit, the play image comprising a game background image against which match gameplay between the plurality of users is played, respective user controlled images manipulated by way of the respective operation signals from the plurality of users, and at least one target image, the movement of which is affected by the respective user controlled images, where the at least one target image is overlaid on the background image,

(ii) determine at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses with respect to one another based on the picked-up image of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses, and

(iii) change at least one of a position of, size of, orientation of, shape of, and contour of the background image based on the determination of the at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses with respect to one another.

The information processing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses include a distinctive light emitting element that is distinguishable in the picked-up image and used to determine the at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses.

3. The information processing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of:

each of the light emitting elements is distinctive by way of different color; and

each of the light emitting elements is elongate in such a way as to provide information for facilitating the determination of the at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses.

The information processing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein when the determination of a relative posture of a first of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses is inclined relative to a reference axis, based on the picked-up image, then at least a first peripheral edge of the background image is correspondingly inclined within the play image.

The information processing apparatus of claim 4 , wherein when the determination of a relative posture of a second of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses is inclined relative to a reference axis, based on the picked-up image, then at least a second peripheral edge of the background image is correspondingly inclined within the play image.

The information processing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the determination of the relative position of a first of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses with respect to a reference position causes a corresponding relative position of at least a first peripheral edge of the background image within the play image.

The information processing apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the determination of the relative position of a second of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses with respect to the reference position causes a corresponding relative position of at least a second peripheral edge of the background image within the play image.

The information processing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the change in at least one of a position of, size of, orientation of, shape of, and contour of the background image based on the determination of the at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses, is such that the at least one target image moves irregularly over the background image in correspondence with the change in at least one of a position of, size of, orientation of, shape of, and contour of the background image.

9. A method, comprising:

accepting a picked-up image of a plurality of operation inputting apparatuses, for each of a plurality of users, picked up by an imaging circuit;

accepting respective operation signals from the plurality of users associated with respective identification information from each of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses, and representative of respective operations from the plurality of different operation inputting apparatuses;

producing a play image for display on a display unit, the play image comprising a game background image against which match gameplay between the plurality of users is played, respective user controlled images manipulated by way of the respective operation signals from the plurality of users, and at least one target image, the movement of which is affected by the respective user controlled images, where the at least one target image is overlaid on the background image;

determining at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses with respect to one another based on the picked-up image of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses, and

changing at least one of a position of, size of, orientation of, shape of, and contour of the background image based on the determination of the at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses with respect to one another.

The method of claim 9 , wherein each of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses include a distinctive light emitting element that is distinguishable in the picked-up image and used to determine the at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein at least one of:

each of the light emitting elements is distinctive by way of different color; and

each of the light emitting elements is elongate in such a way as to provide information for facilitating the determination of the at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses.

The method of claim 9 , wherein when the determination of a relative posture of a first of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses is inclined relative to a reference axis, based on the picked-up image, then at least a first peripheral edge of the background image is correspondingly inclined within the play image.

The method of claim 12 , wherein when the determination of a relative posture of a second of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses is inclined relative to a reference axis, based on the picked-up image, then at least a second peripheral edge of the background image is correspondingly inclined within the play image.

The method of claim 9 , wherein the determination of the relative position of a first of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses with respect to a reference position causes a corresponding relative position of at least a first peripheral edge of the background image within the play image.

The method of claim 14 , wherein the determination of the relative position of a second of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses with respect to the reference position causes a corresponding relative position of at least a second peripheral edge of the background image within the play image.

16. A non-transitory, computer readable storage medium containing a computer program, which when executed by a computer, causes the computer to carry out actions, comprising:

accepting a picked-up image of a plurality of operation inputting apparatuses, for each of a plurality of users, picked up by an imaging circuit;

accepting respective operation signals from the plurality of users associated with respective identification information from each of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses, and representative of respective operations from the plurality of different operation inputting apparatuses;

producing a play image for display on a display unit, the play image comprising a game background image against which match gameplay between the plurality of users is played, respective user controlled images manipulated by way of the respective operation signals from the plurality of users, and at least one target image, the movement of which is affected by the respective user controlled images, where the at least one target image is overlaid on the background image;

determining at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses with respect to one another based on the picked-up image of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses, and

changing at least one of a position of, size of, orientation of, shape of, and contour of the background image based on the determination of the at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses with respect to one another.

The non-transitory, computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein each of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses include a distinctive light emitting element that is distinguishable in the picked-up image and used to determine the at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses.

18. The non-transitory, computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein at least one of:

each of the light emitting elements is distinctive by way of different color; and

each of the light emitting elements is elongate in such a way as to provide information for facilitating the determination of the at least one of relative positions and relative postures of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses.

19. The non-transitory, computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein when the determination of a relative posture of a first of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses is inclined relative to a reference axis, based on the picked-up image, then at least a first peripheral edge of the background image is correspondingly inclined within the play image.

The non-transitory, computer readable storage medium of claim 19 , wherein when the determination of a relative posture of a second of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses is inclined relative to a reference axis, based on the picked-up image, then at least a second peripheral edge of the background image is correspondingly inclined within the play image.

21. The non-transitory, computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the determination of the relative position of a first of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses with respect to a reference position causes a corresponding relative position of at least a first peripheral edge of the background image within the play image.

22. The non-transitory, computer readable storage medium of claim 21 , wherein the determination of the relative position of a second of the plurality of operation inputting apparatuses with respect to the reference position causes a corresponding relative position of at least a second peripheral edge of the background image within the play image.
