Abstract

A barrier coating composition may include an alcohol-based binder; and an inorganic particulate, wherein mineral oil transmission through the barrier coating is such that the reduction in measured IR intensity at 2920 cm −1 is less than 1.0%, as determined by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy.

Claims (27)

1 - 31 . (canceled)

32 . A barrier coating composition, comprising:

an alcohol-based binder; and

an inorganic particulate, wherein mineral oil transmission through the barrier coating is such that the reduction in measured IR intensity at 2920 cm −1 is less than 1.0%, as determined by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy.

33 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 32 , wherein the inorganic particulate is selected from an alkaline earth metal carbonate or sulphate, an aluminosilicate, talc, perlite, diatomaceous earth, magnesium hydroxide and aluminum trihydrate, or combinations thereof.

34 . A barrier coating according to claim 32 , wherein the inorganic particulate is talc.

35 . A barrier coating according to claim 32 , wherein the inorganic particulate is mica.

36 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 32 , wherein the inorganic particulate is an aluminosilicate.

37 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 32 , wherein the inorganic particulate is kaolin having a shape factor of at least 30.

38 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 32 , wherein the inorganic particulate is kaolin having a shape factor of at least 90.

39 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 32 , wherein the alcohol-based binder is polyvinyl alcohol.

40 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 32 , wherein the inorganic particulate and alcohol-based binder are present in the composition in a weight ratio of from about 5:1 to about 1:5.

41 . A barrier coating composition, comprising:

an alcohol-based binder; and

an inorganic particulate, wherein mineral oil transmission through the barrier coating is such that the reduction in measured IR intensity at 2920 cm −1 is less than 20.0%, as determined by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy.

42 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 41 , wherein the inorganic particulate is selected from an alkaline earth metal carbonate or sulphate, an aluminosilicate, talc, perlite, diatomaceous earth, magnesium hydroxide and aluminum trihydrate, or combinations thereof.

43 . A barrier coating according to claim 41 , wherein the inorganic particulate is talc or mica.

44 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 41 , wherein the inorganic particulate is an aluminosilicate.

45 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 41 , wherein the inorganic particulate is kaolin having a shape factor of at least 30.

46 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 41 , wherein the alcohol-based binder is polyvinyl alcohol.

47 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 41 , wherein the inorganic particulate and alcohol-based binder are present in the composition in a weight ratio of from about 5:1 to about 1:5.

48 . A barrier coating composition, comprising:

an alcohol-based binder; and

an inorganic particulate, wherein mineral oil transmission through the barrier coating is such that the reduction in measured IR intensity at 2920 cm −1 is less than 10.0%, as determined by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy.

49 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 48 , wherein the inorganic particulate is selected from an alkaline earth metal carbonate or sulphate, an aluminosilicate, talc, perlite, diatomaceous earth, magnesium hydroxide and aluminum trihydrate, or combinations thereof.

50 . A barrier coating according to claim 48 , wherein the inorganic particulate is talc or mica.

51 . A barrier coating composition according to claim 48 , wherein the inorganic particulate is kaolin having a shape factor of at least 30.
