Abstract

Devices and methods are discussed directed to the use of a low profile laser ablation catheter for use in laser ablation removal of arterial plaque blockages to restore blood flow in the treatment of arteriovenous fistulas. Also discussed are devices and methods directed to packaging, long term storage and sterilization of liquid core ablation catheters.

Claims (10)

1. A method of treating an arteriovenous fistula of a patient, comprising:

axially advancing a liquid core ablation catheter through a blockage that is disposed within or adjacent the arteriovenous fistula while emitting pulsed ultraviolet laser ablation energy from an active emitting surface of a distal end of the liquid core ablation catheter, the active emitting surface comprising at least about 50 percent of an area of the distal end of the liquid core ablation catheter; and

ablating the blockage and debulking the blockage by photodissociation thereof.

The method of claim 1 wherein axially advancing the liquid core ablation catheter comprises axially advancing the liquid core ablation catheter which comprises a multilayer tube that includes a base tube comprising fluorinated material and an inner coating disposed on an inner surface of the base tube, the inner coating comprising a material having a low index of refraction of up to about 1.34 or less, and a biocompatible liquid core which fills an inner lumen within the multilayer tube and which is capable of transmitting pulsed 308 nm ultraviolet high energy pulsed radiation.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein axially advancing the liquid core ablation catheter comprises axially advancing the liquid core ablation catheter which comprises a radiopaque marker band disposed at a distal end of the liquid core ablation catheter.

The method of claim 1 wherein the liquid core ablation catheter comprises an eccentric guidewire lumen with a distal end of the eccentric guidewire lumen being disposed adjacent the distal end of the liquid core ablation catheter and having an axial length of at least about 10 cm and wherein axially advancing the liquid core ablation catheter further comprises axially advancing the liquid core ablation catheter over a guidewire disposed within the eccentric guidewire lumen.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising treating the blockage with a drug eluting balloon catheter to improve long term patency of a neolumen created after the liquid core ablation catheter has traversed the blockage.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein treating the blockage with a drug eluting balloon catheter comprises treating the blockage with a suitable drug configured to control restenosis following an angioplasty procedure.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein treating the blockage with a drug configured to control restenosis following an angioplasty procedure comprises treating the blockage with a compound comprising paclitaxel.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein treating the blockage with a compound comprising paclitaxel comprises treating the blockage with a paclitaxel-iopromide mixture.
