Abstract

The present invention relates to containers and packaging materials, and more particularly to a container having a thermal barrier member for reducing the transfer of heat from and/or to the container. The shipping container preferably comprises an outer vessel with an O-ring and an inner vessel separated by an air gap. The inner vessel has a first and second wall and a lid assembly. The lid assembly has a top lid and a bottom lid and a thermal paste. A felt gasket is preferably positioned between the lid assembly and the first and second walls. The first and second walls comprise at least two relief valves. One relief valve is a Flame Arresting/Smoke Particulate Filtration/Chemical Adsorption Unit Assembly and the valve is bi-directional. The thermal paste is preferably a flowable polymer based heat-absorbing material. The shipping container is stackable on a registration plate with other containers.

Claims (21)

1. A shipping container configured for shipping thermally active materials, the shipping container comprising:

an outer vessel;

an inner vessel with a first and second wall and a lid assembly, where the lid assembly comprises a top lid and a bottom lid and a superabsorbent polymer-based thermal flame retardant paste for preventing the spread of fires with temperatures exceeding 824° F.; and,

where the first and second walls comprise at least two relief valves.

2. The shipping container of claim 1 where there is an air gap between the inner vessel and outer vessel.

3. The shipping container of claim 1 further comprising a felt gasket positioned between the lid assembly and the first and second walls.

4. The shipping container of claim 1 where at least one relief valve is a flame arresting/smoke particulate filtration/chemical adsorption unit assembly.

5. The shipping container of claim 1 further comprising a pallet base attached to the outside vessel.

6. The shipping container of claim 1 where at least one relief valve is bi-directional.

7. The shipping container of claim 1 where the outer vessel further comprises an o-ring.

8. A plurality of shipping containers and at least one registration plate, each shipping container comprising:

an outer vessel;

an inner vessel with a first and second wall and a lid assembly, where the lid assembly comprises a top lid and a bottom lid and a superabsorbent polymer-based flame retardant thermal paste for preventing the spread of fires with temperatures exceeding 824° F.; and,

where the first and second walls comprise at least two relief valves;

where the plurality of shipping containers are stacked on at least one registration plate, where the at least one registration plate interlocks with the plurality of shipping containers.

9. A shipping container configured for shipping thermally active materials, the shipping container comprising:

a plurality of structural panels defining a container interior configured for receiving thermally active materials, and an exterior disposed adjacent to an environment in which the shipping container is placed,

a thermal barrier member for placement between the thermally active materials and the environment in which a container is placed, the thermal barrier member including a thermal barrier interior panel and a thermal barrier exterior panel, where the thermal barrier interior panel and the thermal barrier exterior panel define a heat absorbing material receiving cavity;

a flowable polymer based flame-retardant material for resisting temperatures exceeding 824° F. disposed within the heat absorbing material receiving cavity, wherein the thermal barrier member is configured to substantially surround the thermally active materials to prevent temperatures exceeding 824° F. from the thermally active materials heating the environment in which the shipping container is disposed to 824° F. or above; and,

at least one pressure relief member for permitting pressure generated by the thermally active materials to be vented to atmosphere.

10. The shipping container of claim 9 where the at least one pressure relief member comprises a flame arresting/smoke particulate filtration/chemical adsorption unit assembly.
