Abstract

The present invention provides a system for enriching a flowing liquid with a dissolved gas inside a conduit. The system comprises two or more capillaries, each capillary delivering a stream of a gas-enriched liquid to the flowing liquid. The first ends of the capillaries are positioned to form an intersecting angle with respect to the effluent streams such that these streams of gas-enriched liquid collide with each other upon exit from the first ends of the capillaries, effecting localized convective mixing within the larger liquid conduit before these gas-enriched streams are able to come into close contact with the boundary surfaces of the conduit, whereby the gas-enriched liquid mixes with the flowing liquid to form a gas-enriched flowing liquid. In the preferred embodiment, no observable bubbles are formed in the gas-enriched flowing liquid. Methods of making and using such system are also provided.

Claims (23)

1. A method of assembling a system for enriching a flowing liquid inside a conduit with a gas-enriched liquid, the method comprising:

providing two or more capillaries each having the first and second ends for delivery of a gas-enriched liquid, wherein an effluent stream exits from the first end of each capillary;

wherein providing two or more capillaries further comprises:

providing a single lumen capillary tube;

wrapping the tube around a curved tool with a known radius to form a capillary of a modified shape having a curved segment; and

cutting and removing a part of the curved segment to form two capillaries with exposed lumen;

positioning the first ends of the capillaries to form an intersecting angle with respect to the effluent streams such that these streams of gas-enriched liquid collide with each other upon exit from the first ends of the capillaries, effecting localized convective mixing within a conduit before the streams come into close contact with the boundary surfaces of the conduit; and

operatively connecting second ends of the capillaries to a source of the gas-enriched liquid.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein cutting and removing a part of the curved segment to form the two capillaries is conducted in such a way that each of the obtained two capillaries has a curved portion, wherein end of the curved portion is the first end of the capillary.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the radius of the curved tool is less than 0.10 inches.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein cutting and removing a part of the curved segment to form the two capillaries is conducted in such a way that an internal wall of a longitudal cross-section of the capillary remains intact after the cutting.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein wrapping the tube around the curved tool with the known radius to form the capillary of the modified shape having the curved segment further comprises fixing the modified shape of the capillary.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising a step of placing the capillaries within a tip portion of a catheter adapted to be inserted into the conduit in communication with the flowing liquid.

A method of assembling a system for enriching a flowing liquid inside a conduit with a gas-enriched liquid, the method comprising: providing two or more capillaries each having first and second ends for delivery of a gas-enriched liquid, wherein an effluent stream exits from the first end of each capillary, and wherein providing the two or more capillaries further comprises: providing a separate capillary tube for each capillary end; inserting each tube into a slot on a tip adapter in such a way as to produce a geometry for intersecting capillary jets; and holding each capillary in place with an outer sleeve that could be shrunk over the tip adapter to lock the capillaries in place; positioning the first ends of the capillaries to form an intersecting angle with respect to the effluent streams such that these streams of gas-enriched liquid collide with each other upon exit from the first ends of the capillaries, effecting localized convective mixing within a conduit before the streams come into close contact with the boundary surfaces of the conduit; and operatively connecting second ends of the capillaries to a source of the gas-enriched liquid.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the two or more capillaries are part of a catheter.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the catheter further comprises a passage for a guide wire.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the sleeve comprises polyether block amide.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the two or more capillaries comprise three capillaries.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the intersecting angle is between 20 degrees and 150 degrees.

13. The method of claim 7 , wherein the intersecting angle is 90 degrees.

14. The method of claim 7 , wherein the capillary jets are laminar jets.

15. The method of claim 7 , wherein the two or more capillaries split from a lumen tube.

16. The method of claim 7 , wherein the two or more capillaries are enclosed within a tip sleeve.
