Abstract

A robot arm comprising a joint mechanism for articulating one limb ( 310 ) of the arm relative to another limb ( 311 ) of the arm about two non-parallel rotation axes ( 20, 21 ), the mechanism comprising: an intermediate carrier ( 28 ) attached to a first one of the limbs by a first revolute joint having a first rotation axis and to a second one of the limbs by a second revolute joint having a second rotation axis; a first drive gear ( 33 ) disposed about the first rotation axis and fast with the carrier, whereby rotation of the carrier relative to the first limb about the first rotation axis can be driven; a second drive gear ( 37 ) disposed about the second rotation axis and fast with the second one of the limbs, whereby rotation of the second one of the limbs about the second rotation axis relative to the carrier can be driven; at least one of the first and second drive gears being a sector gear.

Claims (26)

1. A robot arm having a first limb and a second limb connected by a revolute joint, comprising a rotary position sensor arrangement to sense rotary motion about a first rotation axis between a first part and a second part, the rotary position sensor arrangement comprising:

a first ring defining a plurality of magnetic poles, the first ring being attached to the first part;

a second ring defining a plurality of magnetic poles, the second ring being attached to the first part;

a first sensor attached to the second part to sense motion of the magnetic poles of the first ring past that sensor; and

a second sensor attached to the second part to sense motion of the magnetic poles of the second ring past that sensor;

the first ring and the second ring being spaced from each other in a direction along the first rotation axis and the first ring being mounted on an opposite axial side of the revolute joint to the second ring.

2. A robot arm as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first part comprises material interposed between the first and second rings.

3. A robot arm as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first part and the second part are attached by a pair of bearings defining the revolute joint about the first rotation axis, the bearings being located at extremities of an interface between the first and second parts along the first rotation axis, and wherein the first ring is located at one of the bearings and the second ring is located at the other of the bearings.

4. A robot arm as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the first ring is located so as to lie in a common plane perpendicular to the first rotation axis with the said one of the bearings and the second ring is located so as to lie in a common plane perpendicular to the first rotation axis with the said other of the bearings.

5. A robot arm as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the first ring is located around the said one of the bearings and the second ring is located around the said other of the bearings.

6. A robot arm as claimed in claim 1 , wherein spacing along the first rotation axis between the first and second rings is greater than 5 times the thickness of the rings in a direction along the first rotation axis.

7. A robot arm as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first and second rings are located at extremities of an interface between the first part and the second part.

8. A robot arm having a first limb and a second limb connected by a revolute joint, comprising a rotary position sensor arrangement to sense rotary motion about a first rotation axis between a coupler and the first limb, the first limb being attached to the second limb by the coupler, the rotary position sensor arrangement comprising:

a first ring defining a plurality of magnetic poles, the first ring being attached to the coupler;

a second ring defining a plurality of magnetic poles, the second ring being attached to the coupler;

a first sensor attached to the first limb to sense motion of the magnetic poles of the first ring past that sensor; and

a second sensor attached to the first limb to sense motion of the magnetic poles of the second ring past that sensor;

the first ring and the second ring being spaced from each other in a direction along the first rotation axis and the first ring being mounted on an opposite axial side of the revolute joint to the second ring.

9. A robot arm as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the coupler is attached to the second limb by a revolute joint having a second rotation axis oblique to the first rotation axis.

10. A robot arm as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the coupler comprises material interposed between the first and second rings.

11. A robot arm as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the coupler and the first limb are attached by a pair of bearings defining the revolute joint about the first rotation axis, the bearings being located at extremities of an interface between the first and second parts along the first rotation axis, and wherein the first ring is located at one of the bearings and the second ring is located at the other of the bearings.

12. A robot arm as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the first ring is located so as to lie in a common plane perpendicular to the first rotation axis with the said one of the bearings and the second ring is located so as to lie in a common plane perpendicular to the first rotation axis with the said other of the bearings.

13. A robot arm as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the first ring is located around the said one of the bearings and the second ring is located around the said other of the bearings.

14. A robot arm as claimed in claim 8 , wherein spacing along the first rotation axis between the first and second rings is greater than 5 times the thickness of the rings in a direction along the first rotation axis.

15. A robot arm as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the first and second rings are located at extremities of the coupler.

16. A robot arm as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the coupler lies at a radial location that is between the first ring and the second ring.
