Abstract

A method of neurostimulation includes delivering an electrical signal to a plurality of electrodes ( 215 A, 215 B) connected to a patient. The electrical signal is characterized by an amplitude and a carrier frequency. The method includes modulating an electrical signal based on an audio waveform. In some cases, the modulation may include modulating at least one of an amplitude and a carrier frequency based on the audio waveform. A neurostimulation device ( 200 ) comprising first and second electrodes is also disclosed.

Claims (38)

1. A method of neurostimulation, comprising:

generating an electrical signal comprising an amplitude and a carrier frequency; and

stimulating a vestibular system of a patient via galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) by delivering a modulated version of the generated electrical signal to a plurality of electrodes connected to the patient,

wherein the generated electrical signal is modulated based on an audio waveform, and

wherein the carrier frequency is greater than 3 kilohertz (kHz).

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modulated version of the generated electrical signal is an amplitude-modulated electrical signal.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the audio waveform comprises music.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the audio waveform comprises voice.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising delivering the audio waveform to the patient acoustically, wherein the delivering of the audio waveform is performed simultaneously with delivering the modulated version of the generated electrical signal.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modulated version of the generated electrical signal is delivered to the patient via transdermal electrical stimulation.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modulated version of the generated electrical signal is a frequency-modulated electrical signal.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the carrier frequency is greater than 10 kHz.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting the carrier frequency of the electrical signal and a modulation frequency, wherein the carrier frequency of the electrical signal is configured to lower skin impedance, and wherein the modulation frequency is configured to stimulate a vestibular system of the patient.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the modulated frequency between 0.005 Hz and 200 Hz.

11. A neurostimulation device, comprising:

first and second electrodes; and

a controller comprising a waveform generator that is configured to stimulate a vestibular system of a subject via galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) through delivery of a modulated electrical signal to the subject through the first and second electrodes,

wherein the waveform generator is configured to generate the modulated electrical signal by modulating an electrical signal based on an audio waveform,

wherein the electrical signal comprises an amplitude and a carrier frequency, and

wherein the carrier frequency is greater than 3 kilohertz (kHz).

12. The neurostimulation device of claim 11 , wherein the modulated electrical signal is an amplitude-modulated electrical signal.

13. The neurostimulation device of claim 11 , wherein the audio waveform comprises music.

14. The neurostimulation device of claim 11 , wherein the audio waveform comprises voice.

15. The neurostimulation device of claim 11 , further comprising:

a speaker that is configured to acoustically deliver the audio waveform to the subject simultaneous with the stimulation of the vestibular system of the subject via GVS.

16. The neurostimulation device of claim 15 , wherein the speaker is a bone conduction speaker.

17. The neurostimulation device of claim 11 , further comprising:

first and second speakers; and

first and second earpieces, each of the first and second earpieces comprising a respective one of the first and second electrodes and a respective one of the first and second speakers,

wherein each of the first and second earpieces is configured to be insertable into a respective ear canal of the subject and configured to stimulate the vestibular system of the subject using galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) by delivering the modulated electrical signal via the respective electrode of the earpiece, and simultaneously deliver the audio waveform acoustically to the subject via the respective speaker of the earpiece.

18. The neurostimulation device of claim 11 , wherein the modulated electrical signal is a frequency-modulated electrical signal.

19. The neurostimulation device of claim 11 , wherein the carrier frequency is greater than 10 kHz.

20. The neurostimulation device of claim 11 , wherein the electrical signal to be modulated is a continuous sinusoidal electrical signal.

21. A method of neurostimulation, comprising:

generating an electrical signal comprising an amplitude and a carrier frequency greater than 3 kilohertz (kHz);

modulating the electrical signal using a waveform having a frequency component within a range of 20 to 20,000 hertz (Hz), resulting in a modulated electrical signal; and

stimulating a vestibular system of a patient via galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) by delivering the modulated electrical signal to a subject via an electrode positioned in an ear canal of the subject.
