Abstract

A pressure sensing circuit for use with a wireless sensor that includes an antenna and a pressure sensing element. The antenna includes a first pole and a second pole and is operable to transceive radio frequency signals between the wireless sensor and a wireless data collecting device. The pressure sensing element includes an electrical circuit and a diaphragm. When pressure is applied to the diaphragm, a characteristic of the electrical circuit changes. The changing of the characteristic of the electrical circuit causes one or more RF characteristics of the wireless sensor to change, which is interpretable to determine a pressure being applied to the pressure sensing element.

Claims (27)

1. A pressure sensing circuit for use with a wireless sensor, the pressure sensing element comprises:

an antenna having a first pole and a second pole, wherein the antenna transceives radio frequency (RF) signals between the wireless sensor and a wireless data collecting device; and

a pressure sensing element operably coupled to the antenna, wherein the pressure sensing element includes an electrical circuit and a diaphragm, wherein, as a result of pressure variations on the diaphragm, a characteristic of the electrical circuit changes, wherein the changing of the characteristic of the electrical circuit causes one or more RF characteristics of the wireless sensor to change, and wherein a change of the one or more RF characteristics of the wireless sensor is interpretable to determine a pressure being applied to the pressure sensing element.

2. The pressure sensing circuit of claim 1 further comprises:

the electric circuit including an inductive tuning loop; and

the diaphragm includes a metal plate, wherein, as pressure is applied to the metal plate causing a decreased distance between the inductive tuning loop and the metal plate, inductance of the inductive tuning loop is decreased.

3. The pressure sensing circuit of claim 1 further comprises:

the electric circuit including an inductive tuning loop; and

the diaphragm includes a puck diaphragm, wherein the puck diaphragm includes a metal material and includes a hermetically sealed core, wherein, as pressure is applied to the puck diaphragm, inductance of the inductive tuning loop is increased.

4. The pressure sensing circuit of claim 1 further comprises:

the electric circuit including a variable capacitance circuit that includes a first plate and a second plate; and

the diaphragm includes a metal plate, wherein the first plate and the metal plate form a first capacitor and the second plate and the metal plate form a second capacitor, wherein, as pressure is applied to the metal plate, capacitance of the first and second capacitors is changed.

5. The pressure sensing circuit of claim 4 further comprises:

the first and second capacitors coupled in series, wherein the first plate is coupled to the first pole of the antenna and the second plate is coupled to the second pole of the antenna, wherein the first plate, the second plate and spacing between the first and second plates and the diaphragm are selected to provide a desired capacitance value for each of the first and second capacitors.

6. The pressure sensing circuit of claim 1 further comprises:

the electric circuit including a variable capacitance circuit that includes a first plate and a second plate; and

the diaphragm includes a puck diaphragm, wherein the first plate and the metal plate form a first capacitor and the second plate and the metal plate form a second capacitor, wherein the puck diaphragm includes a metal material and includes a hermetically sealed core, wherein, as pressure is applied to the puck diaphragm, capacitance of the first and second capacitors is reduced.

7. The pressure sensing circuit of claim 6 , wherein the puck diaphragm comprises:

side walls;

a top wall; and

a bottom wall, wherein the bottom wall is towards the first and second plates of the variable capacitance circuit, wherein the bottom wall is thinner than the side walls and the top wall such that, when pressure is applied, the bottom wall moves while the side walls and the top wall remain substantially unmoved.

8. The pressure sensing circuit of claim 1 , wherein an RF characteristic of the one or more RF characteristics comprises:

an impedance at a frequency;

a power level at a frequency;

a resonant frequency;

a quality factor; and

a gain.
