Abstract

A filter paper cup for making a beverage pod. The filter paper cup includes a base (or receptacle) and may include a cover. The filter paper cup is formed by forming pleats in walls and a rim around the tops of the wall. Preferably, a heat seal filter paper is used and the pleats in the walls and rim are adhered by the heat to retain the shape. The base in inserted into a pod holder and brewing material is placed into the base. A cover may be positioned over the rim, and a lid is attached to the pod holder to sandwich the cover and rim to seal the pod. The cover, if present, is held taut by the lid of the pod holder to facilitate penetration of the cover by a needle to inject water into the pod.

Claims (58)

1. A beverage pod, comprising:

a receptacle made from water-permeable material and shaped to receive and hold brewing material, wherein the receptacle includes:

a base having a peripheral edge,

a pleated sidewall extending outward from the peripheral edge of the base and terminating in an opening, and

a pleated annular rim encircling the sidewall opening to form an outside perimeter of the receptacle;

wherein the receptacle is formed from a single sheet of the water-permeable material, which is pleated to form the shape of the receptacle.

2. The beverage pod of claim 1 , wherein:

the water permeable material is filter paper; and

the receptacle is formed from a sheet of the filter paper.

3. The beverage pod of claim 1 , further comprising a cover having a diameter no smaller than an inner diameter of the annular rim.

4. The beverage pod of claim 3 , wherein the cover includes filter paper.

5. The beverage pod of claim 3 , wherein the cover includes foil.

6. The beverage pod of claim 1 , wherein the sidewall of the receptacle is perpendicular to the receptacle base.

7. The beverage pod of claim 1 , wherein the sidewall of the receptacle has a generally frusto-conical shape.

8. The beverage pod of claim 1 , wherein the pleated annular rim includes pleats common to the pleated sidewall.

9. The beverage pod of claim 1 , wherein the water-permeable material includes heat-sealable filter paper.

10. The beverage pod of claim 9 , wherein the receptacle includes pleats that are heat-sealed pleats.

11. The beverage pod of claim 1 , wherein the water-permeable material includes a mesh material.

12. A beverage pod of claim 3 , comprising:

a receptacle made from water-permeable material and shaped to receive and hold brewing material; and

a cover having a diameter no smaller than an inner diameter of the annular rim;

wherein the receptacle includes:

a base,

a pleated sidewall extending outward from the base and terminating in an opening, and

a pleated annular rim encircling the sidewall opening to form an outside perimeter of the receptacle;

wherein the receptacle is formed from a single sheet of the water-permeable material, which is pleated to form the shape of the receptacle;

wherein the cover includes heat-sealable filter paper.

13. A beverage pod, comprising:

a receptacle made from water-permeable material and shaped to receive and hold brewing material, wherein the receptacle includes:

a base,

a pleated sidewall extending outward from the base and terminating in an opening, and

a pleated annular rim encircling the sidewall opening to form an outside perimeter of the receptacle;

wherein the receptacle is formed from a single sheet of the water-permeable material, which is pleated to form the shape of the receptacle; and

wherein the annular rim has an inner diameter of 1.625 inches, and an outer diameter of 2.125 inches.

14. A beverage pod, comprising:

a receptacle made from water-permeable material and shaped to receive and hold brewing material, wherein the receptacle includes:

a base,

a pleated sidewall extending outward from the base and terminating in an opening, and

a pleated annular rim encircling the sidewall opening to form an outside perimeter of the receptacle;

wherein the receptacle is formed from a single sheet of the water-permeable material, which is pleated to form the shape of the receptacle; and

wherein the receptacle base has a diameter of 1.25 inches and a height of one inch.

15. A beverage cartridge, comprising:

the beverage pod of claim 1 ;

brewing material disposed in the receptacle; and

a reusable holder, including:

a body having an open end, and a closed end having an aperture; and

a lid having a hole, wherein the lid is selectively couplable to the body by cooperating features of the body and lid so as to selectively cover and uncover the open end of the body;

wherein the annular rim of the receptacle is configured to be held in place between the lid and the body of the reusable holder when the lid is coupled to the body and the beverage pod is inside the holder.

16. The beverage cartridge of claim 15 , wherein the beverage pod further comprises a cover that is configured to be held taut over the opening of the sidewall of the receptacle by the cooperation of the lid and the body of the holder.

17. The beverage cartridge of claim 15 , further including a spring arranged at the closed end of the holder body and biased toward the holder lid.

18. The beverage cartridge of claim 15 , wherein the brewing material is retained in the cartridge solely by holding the annular rim of the receptacle in place between the coupled lid and body of the holder.

19. The beverage cartridge of claim 16 , wherein the lid of the reusable holder is couplable to the body of the reusable holder to seal the receptacle cover to the receptacle annular rim.

20. A beverage cartridge, comprising:

the beverage pod of claim 1 ; and

a reusable holder, including:

a body having an open end, and a closed end having an aperture; and

a lid having a hole, wherein the lid is selectively couplable to the body by cooperating features of the body and lid so as to selectively cover and uncover the open end of the body;

wherein the annular rim of the receptacle is configured to be held in place between the lid and the body of the reusable holder; when the lid is coupled to the body and the beverage pod is inside the holder.
