Abstract

A pipe transporter traction wheel suitable for mounting on a pipe transporter travelable along an interior surface of a pipe may include a tractor portion configured to be attached to a pipe transporter, the tractor portion having a tractor surface configured to contact an interior surface of a pipe when the pipe transporter is driven in the pipe. The tractor portion may include a harder granular material and a softer matrix material embedding the granular material. The wheel may include a hub and/or a mounting interface. A kit may be provided including one or two adapters and a wheel.

Claims (12)

1. A pipe transporter traction wheel suitable for mounting on a pipe transporter travelable along an interior surface of a pipe, the pipe transporter traction wheel comprising:

a hub configured to be attached to a pipe transporter, the hub having a generally annular configuration with a central hub opening and an irregular exterior shape, the hub defining a plurality of guide passages therein; and

a traction portion attached to the hub due to an interlock of portions of the traction portion with the irregular exterior shape of the hub, the traction portion having a traction surface configured to contact an interior surface of a pipe when the pipe transporter is driven in the pipe, the traction surface extending around a circumference of the traction portion, the traction portion including a plurality of traction sections spaced apart from one another around the circumference of the traction portion and separated by gaps, each of the guide passages in the hub being located interstitially between respective pairs of the traction sections and adjacent a respective one of the gaps, each of the traction sections including a part of the traction surface, the traction portion including a granular material and a matrix material embedding the granular material, the granular material having a hardness higher than a hardness of the matrix material, a density of the granular material being higher nearer the traction surface than at other locations within the traction portion, and a density of the granular material being lower nearer the guide passages and the gaps than at other locations within the traction portion.

2. The pipe transporter traction wheel of claim 1 , wherein the traction portion includes a rear wheel surface and a front wheel surface, the traction sections and the gaps extending from the rear wheel surface to the front wheel surface.

3. The pipe transporter traction wheel of claim 1 , wherein a mounting interface is located generally around a central axis of the traction portion, the mounting interface being configured for attachment of the pipe transporter traction wheel to the pipe transporter.

4. The pipe transporter traction wheel of claim 3 , wherein the mounting interface includes an opening between a rear wheel surface and a front wheel surface of the traction portion.

5. The pipe transporter traction wheel of claim 4 , wherein the mounting interface includes a plurality of lobes, the lobes extending radially inward toward the central axis and being separated by gaps.

6. The pipe transporter traction wheel of claim 1 , wherein the traction portion is configured so that the portions of the traction portion interlocking with the irregular exterior shape contact, fill, and surround the irregular exterior shape.

7. The pipe transporter traction wheel of claim 6 , wherein the irregular exterior shape includes openings extending through the hub, a part of the traction portion being located within each of the openings.

8. The pipe transporter traction wheel of claim 6 , wherein the irregular exterior shape includes surface channels, a part of the traction portion being located within each of the surface channels.

9. The pipe transporter traction wheel of claim 8 , wherein the surface channels are dove-tail shaped.

10. The pipe transporter traction wheel of claim 1 , wherein each guide passage includes a groove defined along a surface of the hub.
