Abstract

A pancreatic stent includes a main body convertible between a compressed configuration for delivery and an expanded configuration once deployed, the main body including an inner surface defining a stent lumen and an outer surface. A plurality of drainage features are formed within the outer surface of the main body, the plurality of drainage features permitting placement of the pancreatic stent within a patient's pancreas without blocking side branches of the pancreas.

Claims (32)

1. A medical stent comprising:

a main body convertible between a compressed configuration for delivery and an expanded configuration once deployed, the main body including an inner surface defining a stent lumen and an outer surface;

a plurality of drainage features formed within the outer surface of the main body and at least partly formed by the outer surface of the main body, the plurality of drainage features permitting placement of the medical stent within a patient's body structure without blocking side branches of the body structures;

wherein the main body includes an expandable metal framework; and

a polymeric layer over the expandable metal framework creating the outer surface of the main body;

wherein the outer surface is non-uniform and includes high spots forming peaks of the plurality of drainage features.

2. The medical stent of claim 1 , wherein the expandable metal framework and the polymeric layer in combination are convertible between the compressed configuration and the expanded configuration.

3. The medical stent of claim 1 , wherein the expandable metal framework comprises a braided metal structure.

4. The medical stent of claim 3 , wherein the braided metal structure comprises nitinol.

5. The medical stent of claim 1 , wherein in the compressed configuration, the medical stent has a diameter of at least 2 millimeters.

6. The medical stent of claim 3 , wherein in the expanded configuration, the medical stent has a diameter in the range of about 4 to about 24 millimeters.

7. A medical stent comprising:

an expandable metal support structure that is convertible between a compressed configuration for delivery and an expanded configuration once deployed;

a polymeric covering disposed over the expandable metal support structure and defining an outer surface of the medical stent, the polymeric covering expandable with the expandable metal support structure; and

a plurality of drainage features formed in the medical stent and at least partly formed by the outer surface of the medical stent, the plurality of drainage features permitting placement of the medical stent within a patient's body structure without blocking side branches of the body structure;

wherein the expandable metal support structure comprises a braided metal stent formed having a high-low pattern in at least some adjoining windings.

8. The medical stent of claim 7 , wherein the polymeric covering conforms to the high-low pattern in at least some of the adjoining windings to partly form the plurality of drainage features.

9. The medical stent of claim 7 , wherein the braided metal stent is formed from nitinol wire.

10. The medical stent of claim 7 , wherein the high-low pattern is formed by braiding the braided metal stent on a mandrel having a high-low pattern formed on an outer surface of the mandrel.

11. The medical stent of claim 7 , wherein at least some of the plurality of drainage features extend helically about the medical stent.

12. A medical stent comprising:

a drainage feature defined by a valley between first and second peaks;

an expandable metal support structure including a first, second, and third wire, the first wire following the first peak at least partially around a circumference of the medical stent, the second wire following the second peak at least partially around the circumference of the medical stent, and the third wire following the valley at least partially around the circumference of the medical stent; and

a polymeric covering disposed at least over the first and second wires of the expandable metal support structure to form the first and second peaks of the drainage feature.

13. The medical stent of claim 12 , wherein the expandable metal support and the polymeric covering in combination are convertible between a compressed configuration for delivery and an expanded configuration once deployed.

14. The medical stent of claim 13 , wherein in the compressed configuration, the medical stent has a diameter of at least 2 millimeters.

15. The medical stent of claim 14 , wherein in the expanded configuration, the medical stent has a diameter in the range of about 4 to about 24 millimeters.

16. The medical stent of claim 12 , wherein the first, second and third wires extend in a helical direction along the expandable metal support structure.

17. The medical stent of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of drainage features include a valley defined between adjacent peaks extending helically about the medical stent, wherein the valley and peaks are defined by a high-low pattern in a braided structure of the expandable metal framework.

18. The medical stent of claim 17 , wherein the valley is located at the same radial distance as an outer diameter of the main body between adjacent drainage features.

19. The medical stent of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of drainage features include a valley defined between adjacent peaks extending helically about the medical stent, wherein the valley and peaks are defined by the high-low pattern.

20. The medical stent of claim 19 , wherein the valley is located at the same radial distance as an outer diameter of the expandable metal support structure between adjacent drainage features.
