Abstract

Devices and methods for treating vascular defects, such as, for example, balloon-type aneurysms, are described herein. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes an insertion portion and an expandable implant. The expandable implant is configured to be deployed in an aneurysm and is coupled to the insertion portion. The expandable implant has a first portion and a second portion coupled to the first portion. The expandable implant is movable between a first configuration in which the first portion and the second portion are substantially linearly aligned and a second configuration in which the second portion at least partially overlaps the first portion.

Claims (22)

1. An implant configured to be positioned within an aneurysm, the implant comprising:

an expandable mesh ribbon formed of a tubular braid flattened along at least a portion of its longitudinal axis such that opposing sidewalls of the tubular braid are urged towards one another, the mesh ribbon having a collapsed, elongated configuration for delivery through a catheter to an aneurysm and an expanded configuration in which the mesh ribbon curves into a biased, predetermined, three-dimensional shape, wherein the mesh ribbon has a first portion and a second portion coupled to the first portion along the length of the mesh ribbon, and wherein, when the mesh ribbon is in the expanded configuration, the first portion curves around the second portion such that the first and second portions overlap.

2. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the three-dimensional shape is spherical.

3. The implant of claim 1 , wherein, when the mesh ribbon is in the expanded configuration, the second portion is disposed within an interior region defined by the first portion.

4. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the mesh ribbon has a first porosity when the mesh ribbon is in the collapsed configuration and a second porosity when the mesh ribbon is in the expanded configuration.

5. The implant of claim 1 , wherein, when the mesh ribbon is in the expanded configuration the first portion has a first predetermined three-dimensional shape with a first width, and the second portion has a second three-dimensional shape with a second width less than the first width.

6. The implant of claim 5 , wherein the first three-dimensional shape is spherical.

7. The implant of claim 6 , wherein the second three-dimensional shape is spherical.

8. The implant of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the mesh ribbon is configured to be positioned over a neck of the aneurysm when the mesh ribbon is in the expanded configuration.

9. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the mesh ribbon includes fibers of a superelastic alloy.

10. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the mesh ribbon is made of drawn filled tube (“DFT”) wires.

11. An implant configured to be positioned within an aneurysm, the implant comprising:

an expandable mesh ribbon formed of a tubular braid flattened along at least a portion of its longitudinal axis such that opposing sidewalls of the tubular braid are urged towards one another, the mesh ribbon having a first portion and a second portion coupled to the first portion along the length of the mesh ribbon, wherein the mesh ribbon has a collapsed, elongated configuration for delivery through a catheter to an aneurysm and an expanded configuration in which the mesh ribbon bends and twists at multiple turns such that multiple segments of the first portion and the second portion overlap.

12. The implant of claim 11 , wherein the mesh ribbon has a biased, predetermined, three-dimensional shape in the expanded configuration.

13. The implant of claim 11 , wherein, when the mesh ribbon is in the expanded configuration, the second portion is disposed within an interior region defined by the first portion.

14. The implant of claim 11 , wherein the mesh ribbon has a first porosity when the mesh ribbon is in the collapsed configuration and a second porosity when the mesh ribbon is in the expanded configuration.

15. The implant of claim 11 , wherein, when the mesh ribbon is in the expanded configuration, the first portion has a first predetermined three-dimensional shape with a first width, and the second portion has a second three-dimensional shape with a second width less than the first width.

16. The implant of claim 15 , wherein the first three-dimensional shape is spherical.

17. The implant of claim 16 , wherein the second three-dimensional shape is spherical.

18. The implant of claim 11 , wherein at least a portion of the mesh ribbon is configured to be positioned over a neck of the aneurysm when the mesh ribbon is in the expanded configuration.

19. The implant of claim 11 , wherein the mesh ribbon includes fibers of a superelastic alloy.

20. The implant of claim 11 , wherein the mesh ribbon is made of DFT wires.
