Abstract

The present invention is directed to the parenteral procurement of bodily-fluid samples. The present invention is also directed to systems and methods for parenterally procuring bodily-fluid samples with reduced contamination from dermally-residing microbes. In some embodiments, a bodily-fluid withdrawing system is used to withdraw bodily fluid from a patient for incubation in culture media in one or more sample vessels. Prior to withdrawing bodily fluid into the one or more sample vessels for incubation, an initial volume of withdrawn bodily fluid is placed in one or more pre-sample reservoirs and is not used for the incubation in culture media.

Claims (53)

1. A device for procuring a blood sample with reduced contamination from a patient, the device comprising:

a lumen-containing device configured for insertion into the patient; and

a junction configured to be in fluid communication with the lumen-containing device, the device configured to receive a first volume of blood from the patient while the device is in a first state, the device configured to transition without manual intervention to a second state as a direct result of sequestration of an initial portion of the first volume of blood such that the junction is configured to allow the establishment of fluid communication between the lumen-containing device and a sample vessel, the sample vessel containing culture media for facilitating growth of one or more types of microbes, the sample vessel configured to receive a second volume of blood when the device is in the second state,

whereby sequestering the initial portion of the first volume of blood sequesters contaminants present in the first volume of blood, thereby reducing contamination that can lead to false positives in culture tests of the second volume of blood.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the initial portion of the first volume of blood is less than 5 ml.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the initial portion of the first volume of blood is fluidically isolated in a reservoir.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to transition to the second state after blood stops flowing from the patient.

5. The device of claim 3 , wherein the device is configured to transition to the second state as a result of filling the reservoir.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the lumen-containing device is a first lumen-containing device, the device further comprising:

a second lumen-containing device configured to be placed in fluid communication with the junction, the second lumen-containing device being removably insertable into the sample vessel.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the contaminants are dermally-residing microbes.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the amount of blood in the second volume of blood is related to a size of the sample vessel.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the second volume of blood is approximately 2 ml to 10 ml of blood.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the second volume of blood is received into the sample vessel directly after the initial portion of the first volume of blood is sequestered.

11. A device for establishing a fluid flow path between a patient and a sample vessel, the device comprising:

a lumen-containing device configured for insertion into the patient;

tubing configured to be fluidically coupled to the lumen-containing device; and

a diverter configured to transition from a first state to a second state without manual intervention as a direct result of receiving a first volume of blood from the patient, the diverter configured to sequester an initial portion of the first volume of blood and to allow fluid communication between the tubing and the sample vessel when in the second state such that the sample vessel can receive a second volume of blood, the sample vessel containing culture media for facilitating growth of one or more types of microbes,

whereby sequestering the initial portion of blood sequesters contaminants present in the first volume of blood from the tubing, thereby reducing contamination that can lead to false positives in culture tests of the second volume of blood.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the initial portion of the first volume of blood is less than 5 ml.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein the initial portion of the first volume of blood is fluidically isolated in a reservoir.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the reservoir is integrated into the diverter.

15. The device of claim 11 , wherein the lumen-containing device is a first lumen-containing device, the device further comprising:

a second lumen-containing device configured to be fluidically coupled to the diverter, the second lumen-containing device being removably insertable into the sample vessel.

16. The device of claim 11 , wherein the contaminants are dermally-residing microbes.

17. The device of claim 11 , wherein the amount of blood in the second volume of blood is based on a size of the sample vessel.

18. The device of claim 11 , wherein the second volume of blood is approximately 2 ml to 10 ml of blood.

19. A device for establishing a fluid flow path between a patient and a sample vessel, the device comprising:

a lumen-containing device configured for insertion into the patient; and

a flow controller configured to be fluidically coupled to the lumen-containing device, the flow controller defining a first fluid flow path and a second fluid flow path, the first fluid flow path configured to receive a first volume of blood from the patient, the flow controller configured to (a) automatically sequester the first volume of blood in at least a portion of the first fluid flow path and (b) allow fluid communication to be established between the lumen-containing device and the sample vessel after blood stops flowing from the patient such that a second volume of blood can flow from the lumen-containing device, through the second fluid flow path, and toward the sample vessel, the sample vessel containing culture media for facilitating growth of one or more types of microbes,

whereby sequestering the first volume of blood sequesters contaminants present in the first volume of blood from the second fluid flow path, thereby reducing contamination that can lead to false positives in culture tests of the second volume of blood.

20. The device of claim 19 , wherein the contaminants are dermally-residing microbes.

21. The device of claim 19 , further comprising:

an input tubing configured to fluidically couple the lumen-containing device to the flow controller.

22. The device of claim 19 , further comprising:

an output tubing configured to fluidically couple the second fluid flow path of the flow controller toward the sample vessel.

23. The device of claim 19 , wherein the first volume of blood is less than 5 ml.

24. The device of claim 19 , wherein the first volume of blood is sequestered in a reservoir.

25. The device of claim 24 , wherein the reservoir is integrated into the device.

26. The device of claim 24 , wherein the flow controller is configured to establish fluid communication between the lumen-containing device and the sample vessel as a result of filling the reservoir.

27. The device of claim 19 , wherein the amount of blood in the second volume of blood is related to a size of the sample vessel.

28. The device of claim 19 , wherein the second volume of blood is approximately 2 ml to 10 ml of blood.

29. A device for procuring a blood sample with reduced contamination from a patient, the device comprising:

a lumen-containing device configured to establish fluid communication with the patient; and

a junction configured to be placed in fluid communication with the lumen-containing device, the device configured to receive an initial flow of blood from the patient while in a first state, the device configured to transition to a second state without manual intervention as a direct result of sequestering an initial volume of blood and any contaminants present therein such that fluid communication is able to be established between the lumen-containing device and a sample vessel, the sample vessel containing culture media for facilitating growth of one or more types of microbes and configured to receive approximately 2 ml to 10 ml of sample blood.

30. The device of claim 29 , wherein the initial volume of blood is sequestered in a reservoir integrated into the device.

31. The device of claim 29 , wherein the initial volume of blood is less than 5 ml.
