Abstract

An apparatus includes a housing, a fluid reservoir, a flow control mechanism, and an actuator. The housing defines an inner volume and has an inlet port that can be fluidically coupled to a patient and an outlet port. The fluid reservoir is disposed in the inner volume to receive and isolate a first volume of a bodily-fluid. The flow control mechanism is rotatable in the housing from a first configuration, in which a first lumen places the inlet port is in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir, and a second configuration, in which a second lumen places the inlet port in fluid communication with the outlet port. The actuator is configured to create a negative pressure in the fluid reservoir and is configured to rotate the flow control mechanism from the first configuration to the second configuration after the first volume of bodily-fluid is received in the fluid reservoir.

Claims (47)

1. A bodily-fluid transfer device, comprising:

a housing having an inlet port configured to be placed in fluid communication with a bodily-fluid source and an outlet port configured to be placed in fluid communication with a sample reservoir, the housing defining at least a portion of a first flow path and a second flow path; and

a fluid reservoir disposed in the housing and defined at least in part by a wall of the housing, the fluid reservoir configured to receive and contain an amount of bodily-fluid withdrawn from the bodily-fluid source,

the bodily-fluid transfer device having a first configuration in which the first flow path fluidically couples the fluid reservoir to the inlet port such that a negative pressure differential therebetween causes the bodily-fluid to flow from the inlet port, through the first flow path, to the fluid reservoir, and

the bodily-fluid transfer device having a second configuration in which the second flow path fluidically couples the outlet port to the inlet port such that a negative pressure differential therebetween causes a subsequent amount of the bodily-fluid to flow from the inlet port, through the second flow path, and to the outlet port, the bodily-fluid transfer device configured to transition from the first configuration to the second configuration after the amount of the bodily-fluid is in the fluid reservoir.

2. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a seal member at least partially disposed in the housing such that a portion of the seal member defines a fluidic seal with at least a portion of the wall of the housing to at least partially define the fluid reservoir, the seal member configured to facilitate the negative pressure differential between the fluid reservoir and the inlet port.

3. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the amount of the bodily-fluid is prevented from flowing from the fluid reservoir to the outlet port when the bodily-fluid transfer device is in the second configuration.

4. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 1 , wherein the fluid reservoir sequesters the amount of the bodily-fluid when the bodily-fluid transfer device is in the second configuration.

5. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 1 , wherein the bodily-fluid transfer device in the second configuration is such that the subsequent amount of the bodily-fluid flows through the second flow path and bypasses the amount of the bodily-fluid contained in the fluid reservoir, and

wherein bypassing the amount of the bodily-fluid limits contamination of the subsequent amount of the bodily-fluid to reduce false results in culture testing of the subsequent amount of the bodily-fluid.

6. A bodily-fluid transfer device, comprising:

a housing having an inlet port configured to be placed in fluid communication with a bodily-fluid source and an outlet port configured to be placed in fluid communication with a sample reservoir;

a fluid reservoir disposed in the housing and at least partially defined by the housing, the fluid reservoir configured to receive bodily-fluid withdrawn from the bodily-fluid source; and

a seal member at least partially disposed in the housing and at least partially defining the fluid reservoir,

the bodily-fluid transfer device having a first configuration in which (i) a first flow path places the inlet port in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir such that a negative pressure differential therebetween facilitates the bodily-fluid to flow from the inlet port toward the seal member, and (ii) a portion of a second flow path between the inlet and the outlet is obstructed,

the bodily-fluid transfer device having a second configuration in which the second flow path places the inlet port in fluid communication with the outlet port such that a negative pressure differential therebetween facilitates the bodily-fluid to flow from the inlet port toward the outlet port,

the bodily-fluid transfer device configured to transition from the first configuration to the second configuration after the fluid reservoir receives an amount of the bodily-fluid.

7. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 6 , wherein the seal member facilitates the negative pressure differential between the fluid reservoir and the inlet port operable to draw the bodily-fluid from the inlet port and into the fluid reservoir.

8. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 6 , wherein the bodily-fluid transfer device is prevented from transitioning from the first configuration to the second configuration before the fluid reservoir receives the amount of the bodily fluid.

9. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 6 , wherein at least a portion of the amount of the bodily-fluid is prevented from flowing from the fluid reservoir to the outlet port when the bodily-fluid transfer device is in the second configuration.

10. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 6 , wherein the bodily-fluid transfer device in the first configuration prevents the amount of the bodily-fluid from flowing from the inlet port to the outlet port.

11. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 6 , wherein the bodily-fluid transfer device in the second configuration is such that the bodily-fluid flowing through the second flow path bypasses the amount of the bodily-fluid contained in the fluid reservoir, and

wherein bypassing the amount of the bodily-fluid limits contamination of a subsequent amount of the bodily-fluid to reduce false results in culture testing of the subsequent amount of the bodily-fluid.

12. A bodily-fluid transfer device, comprising:

a housing having an inlet port configured to be placed in fluid communication with a bodily-fluid source and an outlet port configured to be placed in fluid communication with a sample reservoir, the housing defining at least a portion of a first flow path and a second flow path;

a fluid reservoir disposed in the housing and at least partially defined by the housing, the fluid reservoir configured to receive and contain bodily-fluid withdrawn from the bodily-fluid source; and

a seal member at least partially disposed in the housing and at least partially defining the fluid reservoir,

the bodily-fluid transfer device having a first configuration in which a first negative pressure differential causes the bodily-fluid to flow from the inlet port, through the first flow path, and toward the seal member,

the bodily-fluid transfer device having a second configuration in which a second negative pressure differential causes bodily-fluid to flow from the inlet port, through the second flow path, toward the outlet port.

13. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 12 , wherein the seal member defines a fluidic seal with inner walls of the housing to at least partially define the fluid reservoir, the seal member configured to facilitate the first negative pressure differential between the fluid reservoir and the inlet port.

14. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 13 , wherein the placing the outlet port in fluid communication with the sample reservoir facilitates a formation of the second negative pressure differential between the outlet port and the inlet port.

15. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 12 , wherein the fluid reservoir is configured to contain an amount of the bodily-fluid, the bodily-fluid transfer device is configured to transition from the first configuration to the second configuration after the amount of the bodily-fluid is in the fluid reservoir.

16. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 12 , wherein the bodily-fluid transfer device in the first configuration is configured such that a portion of the second flow path is obstructed to prevent the bodily-fluid from flowing from the inlet port to the outlet port.

17. The bodily-fluid transfer device of claim 12 , wherein the fluid reservoir is configured to receive and contain an amount of the bodily-fluid, the bodily-fluid transfer device in the second configuration is such that a subsequent amount of the bodily-fluid flows through the second flow path and bypasses the amount of the bodily-fluid contained in the fluid reservoir, and
