Abstract

An adapter for a power tool including a housing, a tool-side connector, and a battery-side connector in electrical communication with each other. The tool-side connector is configured to couple to a power tool, and the battery-side connector is configured to couple to a battery pack. The adapter also includes a communication interface configured to couple with an external device, and a controller. The controller is configured to determine a state of the power tool, operate in a data transmission mode when the power tool is in the idle state, operate in a pass-through mode when the power tool is in the active state, and switch between the data transmission mode and the pass-through mode based on the state of the power tool.

Claims (52)

1. An adapter for electrically connecting a power tool battery pack with a power tool, where the power tool battery pack has a first set of terminals, and the power tool has a second set of terminals, the adapter comprising:

a third set of terminals for electrically connecting with the first set of terminals;

a fourth set of terminals for electrically connecting with the second set of terminals;

a controller connected to the third and fourth set of terminals; and

a wireless communication circuit connected to the controller for wireless communication with a computing device, the wireless communication circuit receiving data from the computing device wherein the controller performs an action according to the data received from the computing device;

wherein the controller is configured to

receive a signal generated by an input device in response to a user input, and

prevent the battery pack from providing power to the power tool in response to receiving the signal;

wherein the power tool includes a work light and the action performed by the controller according to the data received from the computing device is controlling a work light duration of the work light of the power tool.

2. The adapter of claim 1 , wherein the action performed by the controller includes at least one of the list consisting of:

providing data to the computing device via the wireless communication circuit;

modifying an attribute that affects an operation of the power tool, wherein the operation is at least one of the group consisting of minimum fastening speed, maximum fastening speed, trigger ramp up, maximum number of impacts, impacting duration, seating power, breakaway power, and work light brightness; and

activating a visual alert.

3. The adapter of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor connected to the controller.

4. The adapter of claim 3 , wherein the sensor comprises at least one of the list consisting of a current sensor, a speed sensor, and a temperature sensor.

5. The adapter of claim 3 , wherein the controller sends data received from the sensor to the computing device via the wireless communication circuit.

6. The adapter of claim 3 , wherein the sensor is positioned in the power tool and is connected to the controller via the second set of terminals and the fourth set of terminals.

7. The adapter of claim 1 , further comprising a latch movable between a first position engaging one of the power tool battery pack and the power tool, and a second position not engaging the one of the power tool battery pack and the power tool, and a spring biasing the latch towards the first position.

8. A system comprising:

a power tool battery pack has a first set of terminals;

an adapter electrically connectable to the power tool battery pack and a power tool, where the power tool has a second set of terminals, the adapter comprising:

a third set of terminals for electrically connecting with the first set of terminals,

a fourth set of terminals for electrically connecting with the second set of terminals,

a controller connected to the third and fourth set of terminals, and

a wireless communication circuit connected to the controller for wireless communication with a computing device, the wireless communication circuit receiving data from the computing device,

wherein the controller performs an action according to the data received from the computing device;

wherein the controller is configured to

receive a signal generated by an input device in response to a user input, and

prevent the battery pack from providing power to the power tool in response to receiving the signal;

wherein the power tool includes a work light and the action performed by the controller according to the data received from the computing device is controlling a work light duration of the work light of the power tool.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the action performed by the controller includes at least one of the list consisting of:

providing data to the computing device via the wireless communication circuit,

modifying an attribute that affects an operation of the power tool, wherein the operation is at least one of the group consisting of minimum fastening speed, maximum fastening speed, trigger ramp up, maximum number of impacts, impacting duration, seating power, breakaway power, and work light brightness, and

activating a visual alert.

10. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a sensor connected to the controller.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the sensor comprises at least one of the list consisting of a current sensor, a speed sensor, and a temperature sensor.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the controller sends data received from the sensor to the computing device via the wireless communication circuit.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the sensor is positioned in the power tool and is connected to the controller via the second set of terminals and the fourth set of terminals.

14. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a latch movable between a first position engaging one of the power tool battery pack and the power tool, a second position not engaging the one of the power tool battery pack and the power tool, and a spring biasing the latch towards the first position.

15. The adapter of claim 1 , wherein the input device is a power switch located on a housing of the adapter.

16. The adapter of claim 1 , wherein the data received from the computing device is transmitted by the computing device in response to a second user input received by the computing device.

17. The system of claim 8 , wherein the input device is a power switch located on a housing of the adapter.

18. An adapter for electrically connecting a power tool battery pack with a power tool, where the power tool battery pack has a first set of terminals, and the power tool has a second set of terminals, the adapter comprising:

a third set of terminals for electrically connecting with the first set of terminals;

a fourth set of terminals for electrically connecting with the second set of terminals;

a controller connected to the third and fourth set of terminals; and

a wireless communication circuit connected to the controller for wireless communication with a computing device, the wireless communication circuit receiving data from the computing device wherein the controller performs an action according to the data received from the computing device;

wherein the controller is configured to

receive a signal generated by an input device in response to a user input, and

prevent the battery pack from providing power to the power tool in response to receiving the signal;
