Abstract

The present invention provides for an authenticity marker to be embedded within web page and/or email content which allows a user to validate that the content originates from the true source of the content and is not merely a copy. The method includes a user requesting content in the form of a web page and/or email from a server using a web browser or email client. The server receives the request, retrieves the content and forwards it to an authentication server. The authentication server inserts into the retrieved content a unique fractal icon and/or information only known between the owner of the content and the user.

receiving a request from a client computer for the at least one web page;

creating, by the one or more designated servers, formatted data corresponding to the requested at least one web page;

receiving, at the one or more designated servers, a request for the authenticity key used to locate the preferences file;

sending the formatted data to the client computer;

providing the authenticity key for manipulation to determine the file location of the preferences file;

manipulating the authenticity key to determine the file location of the preferences file;

locating the preferences file in the file location;

retrieving the at least one authenticity stamp from the preferences file; and

enabling the at least one authenticity stamp to be displayed with a representation of the formatted data on a display of the client computer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the file location is at least one of a random directory and a location not readily known in order to obscure the location of the preferences file.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the authenticity key is a preferences key.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the authenticity stamp is selected by a user of the client computer.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the display of the authenticity stamp with the representation of the formatted data on the display on the client computer serves to authenticate the formatted data to the user of the client computer.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the preferences file includes an image used for the authenticity stamp.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more designated servers includes at least one web server.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein authenticity key is provided with the formatted data sent to the client computer.

9. A method for authenticating at least one web page, the method comprising:

receiving, at the one or more designated servers, a request for the authenticity key used to locate the preferences file;

sending, by the one or more designated servers, the formatted data to the client computer;

providing, by the one or more designated servers, the authenticity key for processing to determine the file location of the preferences file;

processing the authenticity key to determine the file location of the preferences file;

locating the preferences file in the file location;

retrieving the at least one authenticity stamp from the preferences file; and

enabling the at least one authenticity stamp to be displayed with a representation of the formatted data on a display of the client computer.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the preferences file is accessible by the one or more designated servers.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the file location is at least one of a random directory and a location not readily known in order to obscure the location of the preferences file.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the authenticity key is a preferences key.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the authenticity stamp is selected by a user of the client computer.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the display of the authenticity stamp with the representation of the formatted data on the display on the client computer serves to authenticate the formatted data to the user of the client computer.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the preferences file includes an image used for the authenticity stamp.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the one or more designated servers includes at least one web server.

17. The method of claim 9 , wherein authenticity key is provided with the formatted data sent to the client computer.

18. A method for authenticating at least one web page, the method comprising:

storing at least one authenticity stamp in a preferences file located in a file location accessible by one or more designated servers;

creating, by the one or more designated servers, an authenticity key with information to locate the preferences file;
