Abstract

A pre-fabricated tourniquet that is easy to apply, that ensures consistent and even circumferential pressure, that is light weight, that provides standard life saving operation, and that can be utilized in any setting or situation, and related methods are provided. Mechanically constricting tourniquet apparatus and related methods are provided that are comprised of a tourniquet body, a carriage, a torsion bar, a receiver and a slider. The tourniquet is long enough to encircle a human limb, for example, an arm or leg.

Claims (39)

1. A tourniquet apparatus comprising:

a tourniquet body having a length sufficient to encircle a limb;

a tightening strap having a middle portion extending between opposed first and second ends, said first and second ends of the tightening strap being coupled to respective first and second locations of the tourniquet body;

wherein the tourniquet apparatus is moveable from an unconstricted configuration towards a constricted configuration by moving the first and second locations of the tourniquet body towards each other; a carriage engaged with the tourniquet body, opposed first and second ends of the carriage being positioned adjacent to respective first and second locations of the tourniquet body when the tourniquet apparatus is in the unconstricted configuration.

2. The tourniquet apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a means of creating tension in the tightening strap, thereby biasing the first and second locations of the tourniquet body towards each other such that tension is created in the tourniquet body.

3. The tourniquet apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a torsion bar engaged with the middle portion of the tightening strap, wherein when the torsion bar is rotated, the tightening strap shortens the distance between the first and second locations of the tourniquet body so as to move the tourniquet apparatus towards the constricted configuration, at least a portion of the tourniquet body being in tension when the tourniquet apparatus is in the constricted configuration.

4. The tourniquet apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the tourniquet body creates a radial compression force sufficient to restrict blood flow in the limb when the tourniquet apparatus is in the constricted configuration.

5. The tourniquet apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the carriage includes one or more holder slot to secure the carriage to the tourniquet body and to hold the carriage in place during use of the tourniquet.

6. The tourniquet apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the tourniquet apparatus is moveable between a loop configuration defining a continuous loop for encircling the limb and a non-loop configuration, the tourniquet apparatus further comprising:

a receiver coupled to a first end of the tourniquet body; and

a slider coupled to the tourniquet body, the slider configured to function as a friction buckle providing positional adjustment along a length of the tourniquet body,

wherein each of the first and second locations of the tourniquet body are positioned between the receiver and the slider when the tourniquet apparatus is in the non-loop configuration, and

wherein the slider is configured to engage with the receiver so as to move the tourniquet apparatus from the non-loop configuration to the loop configuration.

7. A method of making a tourniquet apparatus, the method comprising:

providing a tourniquet body, the tourniquet body having a length sufficient to encircle a limb; and

attaching opposed first and second ends of a tightening strap to respective first and second locations of the tourniquet body, the tightening strap having a middle portion extending between the first and second ends of the tightening strap;

wherein the tourniquet apparatus is moveable from an unconstricted configuration towards a constricted configuration by moving the first and second locations of the tourniquet body towards each other; engaging a carriage with the tourniquet body and positioning the carriage relative to the tourniquet body such that opposed first and second ends of the carriage are positioned adjacent to respective first and second locations of the tourniquet body when the tourniquet apparatus is in the unconstricted configuration.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising engaging a torsion bar with the middle portion of the tightening strap, wherein when the torsion bar is rotated, the tightening strap shortens the distance between the first and second locations of the tourniquet body so as to move the tourniquet apparatus towards the constricted configuration, at least a portion of the tourniquet body being in tension when the tourniquet apparatus is in the constricted configuration.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the carriage includes a niche and a narrow bridge at either end of the carriage, for allowing the tourniquet body to move efficiently through and in line when moving the tourniquet apparatus towards the constricted configuration.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the tourniquet body creates a radial compression force sufficient to restrict blood flow in the limb when the tourniquet apparatus is in the constricted configuration.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the tourniquet apparatus is moveable between a loop configuration defining a continuous loop for encircling the limb and a non-loop configuration, the method further comprising:

coupling a receiver to a first end of the tourniquet body; and

coupling a slider to the tourniquet body and positioning the slider along a length of the tourniquet body such that each of the first and second locations of the tourniquet body are positioned between the receiver and the slider when the tourniquet apparatus is in the non-loop configuration,

wherein the slider is configured to function as a friction buckle providing positional adjustment along said length of the tourniquet body, and

wherein the slider is configured to engage with the receiver so as to move the tourniquet apparatus from the non-loop configuration to the loop configuration.

12. A method of using a tourniquet apparatus that is moveable between an unconstricted configuration and a constricted configuration, the method comprising:

positioning the tourniquet apparatus on a limb such that a tourniquet body encircles the limb;

moving first and second locations of the tourniquet body towards each other so as to move the tourniquet apparatus towards the constricted configuration, at least a portion of the tourniquet body being in tension when the tourniquet apparatus is in the constricted configuration

wherein the tourniquet apparatus comprises a tightening strap having a middle portion extending between opposed first and second ends, the first and second ends of the tightening strap being coupled to respective first and second locations of the tourniquet body; wherein the tourniquet apparatus further comprises a carriage engaged with the tourniquet body and positioned relative to the tourniquet body such that opposed first and second ends of the carriage are positioned adjacent to respective first and second locations of the tourniquet body when the tourniquet apparatus is in the unconstricted configuration, the method further comprising moving at least one of the first and second locations of the tourniquet body relative to its respective first and second end of the carriage as the tourniquet apparatus moves towards the constricted configuration.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the tourniquet apparatus further comprises a torsion bar engaged with the middle portion of the tightening strap, the method further comprising rotating the torsion bar to shorten a distance between the first and second locations of the tourniquet body so as to move the tourniquet apparatus towards the constricted configuration.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the tourniquet body creates a radial compression force sufficient to restrict blood flow in the limb when the tourniquet apparatus is in the constricted configuration.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the carriage includes a niche and a narrow bridge at either end of the carriage, for allowing the tourniquet body to move efficiently through and in line when moving the tourniquet apparatus towards the constricted configuration.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the tourniquet apparatus is moveable between a loop configuration defining a continuous loop for encircling a limb and a non-loop configuration, the method further comprising:

adjusting a position of a slider along a length of the tourniquet body;

wherein the slider is configured to engage with a receiver such that engaging the slider and the receiver moves the tourniquet apparatus from the non-loop configuration to the loop configuration and disengaging the slider and the receiver moves the tourniquet apparatus from the loop configuration to the non-loop configuration,

wherein the receiver is coupled to a first end of the tourniquet body,

wherein the slider is configured to function as a friction buckle providing positional adjustment along said length of the tourniquet body, and

wherein each of the first and second locations of the tourniquet body are positioned between the receiver and the slider when the tourniquet apparatus is in the non-loop configuration.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising: selectively engaging the slider and the receiver when the loop configuration is selected and disengaging the slider and the receiver when the non-loop configuration is selected.
