Oral care compositions and methods of use
This invention relates to oral care compositions comprising zinc phosphate, a first source of stannous (e.g., stannous fluoride); and a second source of stannous, wherein the second source of stannous comprises stannous pyrophosphate, as well as to methods of using and of making these compositions.
1. An oral care composition comprising:
a zinc source comprising zinc phosphate, the amount of zinc phosphate is from 0.05 to 10% by weight, relative to the weight of the oral care composition;
a first source of stannous, wherein the stannous comprises stannous fluoride;
a second source of stannous, wherein the second source of stannous comprises stannous pyrophosphate;
a citrate buffer system, wherein the buffer system comprises tri-sodium citrate and citric acid; and
wherein the water concentration of the oral care composition is between 15.0% to 35.0% by wt. of the composition.
2. The oral care composition of claim 1 , wherein the zinc phosphate is a preformed salt of zinc phosphate.
3. The oral care composition of claim 1 , wherein the zinc phosphate is present in an amount sufficient so that the stannous fluoride dissociates to provide a therapeutically effective amount of stannous ions in aqueous solution.

The composition of claim 1 , wherein the first stannous ion source further comprises other stannous halides, and wherein the other stannous halides are selected from a group consisting of: stannous chloride dihydrate, stannous pyrophosphate, organic stannous carboxylate salts such as stannous formate, acetate, gluconate, lactate, tartrate, oxalate, malonate and citrate, stannous ethylene glyoxide, or a mixture thereof.
5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the first stannous ion source is stannous fluoride.

The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises an effective amount of one or more alkali phosphate salts and wherein the alkali phosphate salts are selected from a group consisting of: sodium phosphate dibasic, potassium phosphate dibasic, dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, calcium pyrophosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate, disodium hydrogen orthophosphate, monosodium phosphate, pentapotassium triphosphate and mixtures of any of two or more of these by weight of the composition.
7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the alkali phosphate salt is tetrapotassium pyrophosphate.
8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the alkali phosphate salt is sodium tripolyphosphate.
9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises:
a. Zinc phosphate about 1.0 wt %
b. Stannous pyrophosphate about 0.2 wt %
c. Tetrasodium pyrophosphate about 2.0 wt %.
10. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises:
a. Zinc phosphate about 1.0 wt %
b. Stannous pyrophosphate about 0.3 wt %
c. Tetrasodium pyrophosphate about 2.0 wt %.
11. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises:
a. Zinc phosphate about 1.7 wt %
b. Stannous pyrophosphate about 1.0 wt %
c. Tetrasodium pyrophosphate about 2.0 wt %.
12. A method to improve oral health comprising applying an effective amount of the oral composition of claim 1 , wherein the oral care composition is applied to the oral cavity of a subject in need thereof.
