Abstract

Provided is an illumination device that makes it possible to enhance utilization efficiency of light, and a display device that includes the illumination device. The illumination device includes: a light source that is configured to generate light of a first wavelength; a luminescent body that is configured to wavelength-convert the light of the first wavelength to light of a second wavelength, the second wavelength being different from the first wavelength; and a wavelength selective filter that is provided on a light-incident side of the luminescent body, the wavelength selective filter being configured to transmit the light of the first wavelength and to reflect the light of the second wavelength.

Claims (32)

1. A display device comprising:

a light source that is configured to generate light of a blue light having a first wavelength range;

a quantum dot material in a cured resin configured to convert some of the blue light to green light having a second wavelength range and to red light having a third wavelength range, the quantum dot material in the cured resin being positioned to receive the blue light;

a wavelength selective filter that is provided outside the cured resin, the wavelength selective filter being configured to transmit the light of the first wavelength range and to reflect the light of the second and third wavelength ranges, the wavelength selective filter being positioned to receive the green and red light; and

a display panel that receives from light transmitted through the wavelength selective filter.

2. The display device of claim 1 further comprising at least one light source substrate on which light sources are mounted.

3. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the light source substrate is arranged in a line in a longitudinal direction.

4. The display device of claim 1 further comprising:

a light guide plate positioned to receive the receive the green light, red light, and unconverted blue light; and

a reflection member on a side of the light guide plate.

5. A display device comprising:

a plurality of light sources that is configured to generate light of a blue light having a first wavelength range;

a quantum dot material in a cured resin configured to convert some of the blue light to green light having a second wavelength range and to red light having a third wavelength range, the quantum dot material in the cured resin being positioned to receive the blue light;

a wavelength selective filter that is provided outside the cured resin, the wavelength selective filter being configured to transmit the light of the first wavelength range and to reflect the light of the second and third wavelength ranges, the wavelength selective filter being positioned to receive the green and red light; and

a display panel that receives from light transmitted through the wavelength selective filter.

6. The display device of claim 5 further comprising light source substrates on which the light sources are mounted.

7. The display device of claim 6 , wherein the at least one light source substrate is arranged in a line in a longitudinal direction.

8. The display device of claim 7 further comprising:

a light guide plate positioned to receive the receive the green light, red light, and unconverted blue light; and

a reflection member on a side of the light guide plate.

9. The display device of claim 5 further comprising an optical member, the optical member including a light incident surface that faces the quantum dot material.

10. The display device according to claim 9 , wherein the optical member is a light guide plate.

11. The display device of claim 5 further comprising an optical member, wherein the optical member includes a light incident surface that faces the quantum dot material.

12. The illumination device according to claim 11 , wherein the wavelength selective filter is between the optical member and the quantum dot material.

13. The display device according to claim 12 , wherein the optical member is a light guide plate.

14. The display device according to claim 13 , wherein the light received by light guide plate is along an edge of the light guide plate perpendicular to the reflection member and display panel.

15. The display device according to claim 14 , wherein a width of the wavelength selective filter is larger than a width of the cured resin.

16. The display device according to claim 6 , wherein the light sources are a series of light emitting diodes.

17. The display device according to claim 16 , wherein at least two sets of series of light emitting diodes, the quantum dot material in the cured resin, and the wavelength selection filter are positioned at at least one additional edge of the light guide plate.

18. The display unit according to claim 17 , wherein the quantum dot material crosses a first region and extending to a second region outside the first region, the first region being defined by the direct path of light from the center of the light sources to an upper edge of the light incident surface of an optical component that faces the quantum dot material and the direct path of light from the center of the light sources and a lower edge of the light incident surface.

19. The display device according to claim 18 , wherein the optical member is a light guide plate.

20. The display device according to claim 18 , wherein the wavelength selective filter is between the optical member and the quantum dot material.
