Abstract

A disclosed service for managing mobile and wireless communication devices (MWCDs) includes enabling a server to generate a standard remote configuration command (RCC) and enabling a transmitter coupled to the server to transmit the RCC wirelessly. The RCC configures a feature on a first MWCD of a first supplier and a second MWCD of a second supplier. The RCC may disable one or more of a set of selected MWCD peripheral devices. For example, the RCC may disable an MWCD camera, an MWCD microphone, and/or an MWCD speaker. In some embodiments, the RCC transitions the MWCD to a restricted state in which the MWCD is unable to record multimedia content including audio and video content. In these embodiments, the RCC may configure one or more of the features on each of a set of MWCDs within a defined geographic region.

Claims (37)

1. A remote management method, comprising:

identifying, by a server, mobile devices in proximity to a venue associated with an event, wherein the mobile devices include a first mobile device;

sending each of the mobile devices a message requesting remote configuration permission, wherein said remote configuration permission includes permission enabling the server to configure a mobile device within the venue during the event in a restricted operation state; and

responsive to receiving, from the first mobile device, an affirmative response to the message requesting remote configuration permission, performing, by the server, remote alteration operations, wherein said remote alteration operations include:

sending a first remote configuration command, executable by the first mobile device, to configure the first mobile device in the restricted operation state; and

sending a key to the first mobile device; and

broadcasting a second configuration command within the venue, wherein the second configuration command configures a portion of the mobile devices in a second operation state, wherein the portion of the mobile devices includes mobile devices to which no key was sent, wherein the second configuration command comprises a power down command, broadcasted by the server, wherein the power down command causes the portion of the mobile devices to power down.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the first remote configuration command transitions the first mobile device from a first operation state in which a content recording capability of the first mobile device is determined in accordance with a copyright status of content to be recorded, to a second operation state, in which the content recording capability of the first mobile device is not subject to the copyright status of the content to be recorded.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the first remote configuration command transitions the first mobile device from a first operation state in which a content recording capability of the first mobile device is determined in accordance with a confidential status of particular content, to a second operation state, in which the content recording capability is not subject to the confidential status of the particular content.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the restricted operation state comprises an operation state in which a particular capability of the first mobile device is disabled.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the particular capability comprises an audio recording capability of the first mobile device.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the particular capability comprises a video recording capability of the first mobile device.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the particular capability comprises an audio output capability of the first mobile device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the mobile devices in proximity to the venue comprises detecting the mobile devices coupled to an IEEE 802.11 network associated with the venue.

9. A server, comprising:

a processor; and

computer readable storage, accessible to the processor, including processor-executable program instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform management operations comprising:

identifying mobile devices in proximity to a venue associated with an event, wherein the mobile devices include a first mobile device;

sending each of the mobile devices a message requesting remote configuration permission, wherein said remote configuration permission includes permission enabling the server to configure a mobile device within the venue during the event in a restricted operation state; and

responsive to receiving, from the first mobile device, an affirmative response to the message requesting remote configuration permission, performing remote alteration operations, wherein said remote alteration operations include:

sending a first remote configuration command, executable by the first mobile device, to configure the first mobile device in the restricted operation state; and

sending a key to the first mobile device; and

broadcasting a second configuration command within the venue, wherein the second configuration command configures a portion of the mobile devices in a second operation state, wherein the portion of the mobile devices includes mobile devices to which no key was sent, wherein the second configuration command comprises a power down command, broadcasted by the server, wherein the power down command causes the portion of the mobile devices to power down.

The server of claim 9 , wherein the first remote configuration command transitions the first mobile device from a first operation state in which a content recording capability of the first mobile device is determined in accordance with a copyright status of content to be recorded, to a second operation state, in which the content recording capability of the first mobile device is not subject to the copyright status of the content to be recorded.

11. The server of claim 9 , wherein the first remote configuration command transitions the first mobile device from a first operation state in which a content recording capability of the first mobile device is determined in accordance with a confidential status of particular content, to a second operation state, in which the content recording capability is not subject to the confidential status of the particular content.

12. The server of claim 9 , wherein the restricted operation state comprises an operation state in which a particular capability of the first mobile device is disabled.

13. The server of claim 12 , wherein the particular capability comprises an audio recording capability of the first mobile device.

14. A non-transitory computer readable medium, including processor executable program instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

identifying, by a server, mobile devices in proximity to a venue associated with an event, wherein the mobile devices include a first mobile device;

sending each of the mobile devices a message requesting remote configuration permission, wherein said remote configuration permission includes permission enabling the server to configure a mobile device within the venue during the event in a restricted operation state; and

responsive to receiving, from the first mobile device, an affirmative response to the message requesting remote configuration permission, performing, by the server, remote alteration operations, wherein said remote alteration operations include:

sending a first remote configuration command, executable by the first mobile device, to configure the first mobile device in the restricted operation state; and

sending a key to the first mobile device; and

broadcasting a second configuration command within the venue, wherein the second configuration command configures a portion of the mobile devices in a second operation state, wherein the portion of the mobile devices includes mobile devices to which no key was sent, wherein the second configuration command comprises a power down command, broadcasted by the server, wherein the power down command causes the portion of the mobile devices to power down.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the first remote configuration command transitions the first mobile device from a first operation state in which a content recording capability of the first mobile device is determined in accordance with a copyright status of content to be recorded, to a second operation state, in which the content recording capability of the first mobile device is not subject to the copyright status of the content to be recorded.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the first remote configuration command transitions the first mobile device from a first operation state in which a content recording capability of the first mobile device is determined in accordance with a confidential status of particular content, to a second operation state, in which the content recording capability is not subject to the confidential status of the particular content.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the restricted operation state comprises an operation state in which a particular capability of the first mobile device is disabled.
