Abstract

A beam has a first exterior surface and a second exterior surface opposite the first exterior surface with an opening extending through the beam. A sleeve member extends through the opening from the first exterior surface to the second exterior surface. A first collar defines a first aperture with a first end of the sleeve member extending through the first aperture. The first collar contacts the first exterior surface. A second collar has a second attachment flange that overlays a portion of the second exterior surface of the beam. The second collar has a second aperture with the sleeve member extending therethrough. The first collar and the second collar are positioned and fixedly attached to the beam such that the sleeve member is spaced apart from interior surfaces of the beam that define the opening.

Claims (42)

1. A vehicle body structure, comprising:

a beam having a first exterior surface and a second exterior surface opposite the first exterior surface with an opening extending through the beam from the first exterior surface to the second exterior surface;

a sleeve member extending through the opening from the first exterior surface to the second exterior surface;

a first collar defining a first aperture with a first end of the sleeve member extending through the first aperture, the first collar contacting the first exterior surface; and

a second collar having a second attachment flange that overlays a portion of the second exterior surface of the beam, the second collar having a second aperture with the sleeve member extending therethrough, the first collar and the second collar are positioned and fixedly attached to the beam such that the sleeve member is spaced apart from interior surfaces of the beam that define the opening.

2. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the first collar includes a first alignment flange extending around the sleeve, the first alignment flange extending into the opening adjacent to the first exterior surface of the beam.

3. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the beam has a hollow interior with the first exterior surface being defined along a first wall of the beam, the second exterior surface being defined along a second wall of the beam opposite the first wall, and the opening being defined by a first opening in the first wall and a second opening in the second wall, with the first opening and the second opening being open to the hollow interior.

4. The vehicle body structure according to claim 3 , wherein

with the sleeve member in an uninstalled state relative to the beam, the first collar and the second collar are re-position-able along the exterior surfaces of the beam such that the sleeve member is moved to a predetermined orientation relative to the beam and in an installed state the first collar and the second collar are fixedly attached to the beam and the sleeve member with the sleeve member being fixedly positioned in the predetermined orientation by the first and second collars.

5. The vehicle body structure according to claim 4 , wherein

the first opening of the first wall of the beam has inner surfaces that define a first width and a first height,

the first collar includes a first alignment flange extending around the sleeve, the first alignment flange extending into the opening adjacent to the first exterior surface of the beam, and

the first alignment flange of the first collar includes outer surfaces that define a second width and a second height, the second width being smaller than the first width and the second height being smaller than the first height such that the first alignment flange is moveable within the first opening with the first collar being in the uninstalled state.

6. The vehicle body structure according to claim 5 , further comprising:

an interior collar fixedly attached to an interior surface of the first wall of the beam within the hollow interior of the beam, the interior collar encircling the sleeve member.

7. The vehicle body structure according to claim 6 , wherein

the interior collar includes an interior attachment flange and an interior alignment flange, the interior attachment flange extending in a direction parallel to the interior surface of the first wall of the beam, and the interior alignment flange extending in directions perpendicular to the interior attachment flange.

8. The vehicle body structure according to claim 5 , wherein

the first alignment flange of the first collar is fixedly attached to the sleeve member with the sleeve member in the uninstalled state.

9. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a hollow beam member inserted into the second end of the sleeve member and extending to proximate the first end of the sleeve member with the sleeve member in the uninstalled state and the hollow beam member being fixedly attached to the sleeve member with the sleeve member being fixedly attached to the beam.

10. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

in the uninstalled state the sleeve member is inserted into the first and second openings of the beam but is movable with respect thereto, and

in the installed state the sleeve member is welded to the first and second collars and the first and second collars are welded to the beam.

11. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the beam is part of a vehicle frame that extends in a vehicle longitudinal direction.

12. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the second collar includes a second attachment flange and a second alignment flange, the second attachment flange that overlays a portion of the second exterior surface of the beam and the second alignment flange extends in directions perpendicular to the second attachment flange.

13. The vehicle body structure according to claim 12 , wherein

the beam has a hollow interior with the first exterior surface being defined along a first wall of the beam, the second exterior surface being defined along a second wall of the beam opposite the first wall, and the opening being defined by a first opening in the first wall and a second opening in the second wall, with the first opening and the second opening being open to the hollow interior.

14. The vehicle body structure according to claim 13 , wherein

with the sleeve member in an uninstalled state relative to the beam, the first collar and the second collar are re-position-able along the exterior surfaces of the beam such that the sleeve member is moved to a predetermined orientation relative to the beam and in an installed state the first collar and the second collar are fixedly attached to the beam and the sleeve member with the sleeve member being fixedly positioned in the predetermined orientation by the first and second collars.

15. The vehicle body structure according to claim 14 , wherein

the first opening of the first wall of the beam has inner surfaces that define a first width and a first height,

the first collar includes a first alignment flange extending around the sleeve, the first alignment flange extending into the opening adjacent to the first exterior surface of the beam, and

the first alignment flange of the first collar includes outer surfaces that define a second width and a second height, the second width being smaller than the first width and the second height being smaller than the first height such that the first alignment flange is moveable within the first opening with the first collar being in the uninstalled state.

16. The vehicle body structure according to claim 15 , further comprising:
