Abstract

Aspects herein are directed to an anchorable brachytherapy device configured to be permanently implanted in a tumor bed at the time of operative removal of the tumor. In exemplary aspects, the brachytherapy device may comprise a plurality of hollow tubes that form a spherical or ellipsoid shape. Protrusions or grooves may be formed on an outer surface of the tubes to help anchor the brachytherapy device in the tumor bed. Radioactive seeds or strands may be positioned within the tube channels to provide radiation to the tumor bed.

Claims (30)

1. A brachytherapy device comprising:

a plurality of tubes arranged in a spherical or ellipsoid form having a fixed diameter, each tube of the plurality of tubes having a respective first end and a respective second end, wherein the first ends of the plurality of tubes are joined at a first pole of the spherical or ellipsoid form, and wherein the second ends of the plurality of tubes are joined at a second opposite pole of the spherical or ellipsoid form, the each tube having a continuous tube channel extending along at least a portion of a length of the each tube; and

one or more radioactive elements positioned within one or more of the tube channels, wherein the brachytherapy device is configured to be completely enclosed within a tumor bed.

2. The brachytherapy device of claim 1 , wherein the brachytherapy device comprises one of a bioabsorbable material or a biocompatible material.

3. The brachytherapy device of claim 2 , wherein the biocompatible material is polysiloxane, polydimethylsiloxane, polyether ether ketones, or mixtures thereof.

4. The brachytherapy device of claim 2 , wherein the bioabsorbable material is polyglycolic acid, L polylactic acid, D polylactic acid, or mixtures of L polylactic acid and D polylactic acid.

5. The brachytherapy device of claim 1 , further comprising, a plurality of grooves extending in a negative z-direction with respect to an outer surface plane of at least a portion of the plurality of tubes.

6. The brachytherapy device of claim 5 , wherein each groove of the plurality of grooves is rotationally positioned along a respective tube of the portion of the plurality of tubes.

7. The brachytherapy device of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of protrusions extending in a positive z-direction with respect to an outer surface plane of at least a portion of the plurality of tubes.

8. The brachytherapy device of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of protrusions extend away from a center of the spherical or ellipsoid form.

9. The brachytherapy device of claim 8 , wherein each protrusion of the plurality of protrusions has a base width from about 1.0 to about 5.0 mm and a height from about 0.5 mm to about 5.0 mm.

10. The brachytherapy device of claim 1 , wherein an outer diameter of the each tube of the plurality of tubes is from about 4.0 mm to about 8.0 mm.

11. The brachytherapy device of claim 10 , wherein a diameter of the each tube channel is from about 1.0 mm to about 1.3 mm.

12. The brachytherapy device of claim 1 , wherein a maximum diameter of the brachytherapy device is one of about 2 cm, 3 cm, 5 cm, or 7 cm.

13. A brachytherapy device configured to be completely enclosed within a tumor bed, the brachytherapy device comprising:

a plurality of tubes arranged in a three-dimensional (3-D) form having a fixed diameter, at least a portion of the plurality of tubes having a tube channel extending along at least a portion of a length of the tube, each tube of the plurality of tubes having a first end, a second end, and an intervening portion extending between the first end and the second end; and

one or more radioactive elements positioned within one or more of the tube channels, wherein:

respective first ends of the plurality of tubes are joined at a first location on the 3-D form,

respective second ends of the plurality of tubes are joined at a second location on the 3-D form, and

at least a portion of the plurality of tubes comprise a groove extending in a negative z-direction with respect to an outer surface plane of the tube.

14. The brachytherapy device of claim 13 , wherein respective intervening portions of the plurality of tubes are spaced apart from one another.

15. The brachytherapy device of claim 13 , wherein there is a vacancy at a center portion of the 3-D form.

16. The brachytherapy device of claim 13 , wherein the respective first ends of the plurality of tubes are joined together via a first hub, wherein the respective second ends of the plurality of tubes are joined together via a second hub, and wherein a central column joins the first hub to the second hub.

17. A method of manufacturing a brachytherapy device that is configured to be completely enclosed within a tumor bed, the method comprising:

providing a biocompatible material or a bioabsorbable material;

forming the biocompatible or the bioabsorbable material into the brachytherapy device comprising a plurality of tubes arranged in a spherical or ellipsoid form having a fixed diameter, each tube of the plurality of tubes having a respective first end and a respective second end, wherein the first ends of the tubes are joined at a first pole of the spherical or ellipsoid form, and wherein the second ends of the tubes are joined at a second opposite pole of the spherical or ellipsoid form, the each tube having a continuous tube channel extending along at least a portion of a length of the each tube; and

positioning one or more radioactive elements within one or more of the tube channels.

18. The brachytherapy device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more radioactive elements include one or more of a radioactive seed and a radioactive strand.

19. The brachytherapy device of claim 13 , wherein the one or more radioactive elements include one or more of a radioactive seed and a radioactive strand.

20. The method of manufacturing the brachytherapy device of claim 17 , wherein the one or more radioactive elements include one or more of a radioactive seed and a radioactive strand.
