Abstract

Example ambulation aid apparatus and associated methods of manufacture are disclosed and described herein. An example ambulation aid apparatus includes an ambulation aid body formed as a integral part, the integral part formed in monocoque construction to provide support for mobility of a user through the integral part, the integral part providing a plurality of grippable areas to facilitate user movement and support through the integral part. Another example ambulation aid apparatus includes a primary panel formed in monocoque construction to provide support for and assist in mobility of a user through the skin of the monocoque primary panel, the primary panel formed to interrelate with one or more subassemblies to provide an integrated monocoque part to assist in providing support for and improved mobility of the user through the integrated monocoque part. Example methods of manufacture are also disclosed and described.

Claims (27)

1. An ambulation aid apparatus comprising:

a non-tubular body constructed in a monocoque form from a polymer-based material to form a combined body and frame to provide support through the non-tubular body for mobility of a user,

the non-tubular body formed to include at least a first integrated element and a second integrated element, the first integrated element to at least one of removably mount or attach a first subassembly to the non-tubular body, the first subassembly to facilitate movement of the non-tubular body with respect to a walking surface, and

the second integrated element to at least one of removably mount or attach a second subassembly to the non-tubular body, the second subassembly to include a secondary monocoque panel movably connected to the non-tubular body through at least one of the first and second integrated elements, the secondary monocoque panel extendible and foldable with respect to the non-tubular body.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the polymer-based material includes a foam.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the non-tubular body is formed using injection molding with the foam.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one subassembly includes at least one of a handle, a seat, a tray, a track, a closure, a wheel, a skid, a storage, a grippable area, a fastener, a secondary panel, or a holder.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one subassembly is integrated into the non-tubular body via at least one of the first and second integrated elements.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the non-tubular body further includes ribbing formed as a structural element in the non-tubular body.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further including a filler integrated in the non-tubular body to modify at least one of a strength or a weight of the non-tubular body.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further including at least one of an additive or a treatment to provide at least one of a color, a finish, or an ornamentation to the non-tubular body.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the non-tubular body is to be formed using the polymer-based material according to one or more factors including strength, density, strength to weight ratio, or Young's modulus.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the polymer-based material includes a foaming material and wherein an amount of foaming material forming the non-tubular body depends on the one or more factors.

11. A method of manufacturing an ambulation aid apparatus, the method comprising:

constructing a non-tubular body in a monocoque form from a polymer-based material, the monocoque form to provide support through the non-tubular body for mobility of a user;

determining whether at least one subassembly is to be included; and

when the at least one subassembly is to be included, forming, in the non-tubular body, at least a first integrated element and a second integrated element, the first integrated element to at least one of removably mount or attach a first subassembly to the non-tubular body, the first subassembly to facilitate movement of the non-tubular body with respect to a walking surface,

the second integrated element to at least one of removably mount or attach a second subassembly to the non-tubular body, the second subassembly to include a secondary monocoque panel movably connected to the non-tubular body through at least one of the first and second integrated elements, the secondary monocoque panel extendible and foldable with respect to the non-tubular body.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the polymer-based material includes a foam.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the non-tubular body is formed using injection molding with the foam.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one subassembly includes at least one of a handle, a seat, a tray, a track, a closure, a wheel, a skid, a storage, a grippable area, a fastener, a secondary panel, or a holder.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one subassembly is integrated into the non-tubular body via at least one of the first and second integrated elements.

16. The method of claim 11 , further including forming ribbing as a structural element in the non-tubular body.

17. The method of claim 11 , further including integrating a filler in the non-tubular body to modify at least one of a strength or a weight of the non-tubular body.

18. The method of claim 11 , further including incorporating at least one of an additive or a treatment to provide at least one of a color, a finish, or an ornamentation to the non-tubular body.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the non-tubular body is to be formed using the polymer-based material according to one or more factors including strength, density, strength to weight ratio, or Young's modulus.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the polymer-based material includes a foaming material and wherein an amount of foaming material forming the non-tubular body depends on the one or more factors.
