Abstract

A method and system for the reduction of contamination in soil and groundwater is provided. Cyclic oligosaccharides can be used, for example, to carry oxidants, carry activators, solubilize organic contaminants and promote biodegradation.

Claims (24)

1. A method of reducing the concentration of an organic contaminant in a contaminated material, the method comprising:

desorbing or solubilizing one or more organic contaminants from the contaminated material with a cyclic oligosaccharide solution;

forming an organic contaminant/cyclic oligosaccharide complex in the cyclic oligosaccharide solution; and

adding ozone and air to the cyclic oligosaccharide solution to destroy at least a portion of the organic contaminant/cyclic oligosaccharide complex;

wherein the contaminated material comprises at least one of soil, sediment, rock, water and ground water.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising adding an oxidant in addition to the ozone and air to the cyclic oligosaccharide solution.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the additional oxidant comprises at least one of oxygen, persulfate, peroxide, permanganate, and percarbonate.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the additional oxidant comprises persulfate.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more organic contaminants comprise a perfluoroalkyl compound.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more organic contaminants are desorbed or solubilized in the cyclic oligosaccharide solution ex situ.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more organic contaminants are desorbed or solubilized in the cyclic oligosaccharide solution in situ.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of the ozone and the air is added to the cyclic oligosaccharide solution ex situ.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of the ozone and the air is added to the cyclic oligosaccharide solution in situ.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein any dissolved organic contaminant and the organic contaminant/cyclic oligosaccharide complex are simultaneously destroyed using the ozone.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein any dissolved organic contaminant, dissolved cyclic oligosaccharide and the organic contaminant/cyclic oligosaccharide complex are simultaneously destroyed using the ozone.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the cyclic oligosaccharide comprises at least one of alpha-cyclodextrin or a derivative thereof; beta-cyclodextrin or a derivative thereof; and gamma-cyclodextrin or a derivative thereof.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the beta-cyclodextrin is hydroxypropyl beta cyclodextrin.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more organic contaminants comprises a halogenated organic compound.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more organic contaminants comprises a non-halogenated compound.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the concentration of the one or more organic contaminants is reduced by greater than 50%.

17. The method of claim 1 further comprising introducing at least one of an activator, a catalyst, a complexing agent, a surfactant, and a co-solvent to the cyclic oligosaccharide solution.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein adding ozone and air to at least a portion of the cyclic oligosaccharide solution promotes activity of a bacterial colony to metabolize one or more of the organic contaminants.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein the air is introduced separately from the ozone.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of the ozone and the air is sparged through the cyclic oligosaccharide solution.
