Abstract

Apparatus and methods are described including identifying that a subject suffers from sleep apnea. Positive airway pressure (PAP) is applied to the subject via a mask placed on a face of the subject. A respiratory-related parameter of the subject is sensed, while the mask is on the face of the subject, and a need of the subject for respiratory support is assessed, responsively to the respiratory-related parameter. In accordance with the assessed need, the mask is configured to regulate the PAP provided to the subject's face. Other applications are also described.

Claims (41)

1. A method comprising:

identifying that a subject suffers from sleep apnea;

applying positive airway pressure (PAP) to the subject via a mask placed on a face of the subject;

sensing a respiratory-related parameter of the subject while the mask is on the face of the subject;

assessing a need of the subject for respiratory support responsively to the respiratory-related parameter; and

in accordance with the assessed need, configuring the mask to regulate the PAP provided to the face, by moving a portion of the mask, with the pressure of air provided by an air source that provides the PAP, to change a flow path of air into and out of the mask, wherein configuring the mask to regulate the PAP comprises regulating a distance of the mask from the face of the subject.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein configuring the mask to regulate the PAP comprises, in response to detecting a need for respiratory support, closing one or more vents of the mask that provide air flow from within the mask to outside the mask.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein sensing a respiratory-related parameter of the subject while the mask is on the face of the subject comprises detecting a respiratory-related parameter of the subject that indicates that the subject is undergoing rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and wherein assessing a need of the subject for respiratory support responsively to the respiratory-related parameter comprises assessing the need of the subject for respiratory support responsively to detecting the respiratory-related parameter of the subject that indicates that the subject is undergoing REM sleep.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pressure of air provided by an air source that provides the PAP causes the expansion of spring positioned between the mask and a retaining mechanism securing the mask to the subject.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pressure of air provided by an air source that provides the PAP is applied to a closed cavity within the mask to cause the movement of the portion of the mask.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein air from the air source is prevented from entering the mask when the PAP is inactive.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the air source is operable to move a portion of the mask to cover a vent in the mask.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the air source is operable to move a portion of the mask to provide to open a flow path for air to enter the airway of the subject.

9. A method comprising:

identifying that a subject suffers from sleep apnea;

applying positive airway pressure (PAP) to the subject via a mask placed on a face of the subject;

sensing a respiratory-related parameter of the subject while the mask is on the face of the subject;

assessing a need of the subject for respiratory support responsively to the respiratory-related parameter; and

in accordance with the assessed need, configuring the mask to regulate the PAP provided to the face, by moving a portion of the mask, with the pressure of air provided by an air source that provides the PAP, to change a flow path of air into and out of the mask, wherein configurating the mask to regulate the PAP comprises, in response to detecting a need for respiratory support, unblocking a vent hold so that air supplied to the mask flows into the mask.

10. An apparatus comprising:

a source of positive airway pressure (PAP);

a mask, coupled to the PAP source, and configured to be placed on a face of a subject;

a sensor configured to sense a respiratory-related parameter of the subject;

a control unit, configured to:

assess a need of the subject for respiratory support responsively to the respiratory-related parameter, and

in accordance with the assessed need, configure the mask to regulate the PAP provided to the face, by moving a portion of the mask, with the pressure of air provided by the source of positive airway pressure, to change the flow path of air into and out of the mask, wherein the control unit is configured to regulate the PAP by regulating a distance of the mask from the face of the subject.

11. The apparatus according to claim 10 , wherein the control unit is configured to regulate the PAP by, in response to detecting a need for respiratory support, closing one or more vents of the mask that provide air flow from within the mask to outside the mask.

12. The apparatus according to claim 10 , wherein the control unit is configured to assess the need of the subject for respiratory support responsively to the respiratory-related parameter, by:

identifying that the subject is undergoing rapid eye movement (REM) sleep based upon the respiratory-related parameter, and assessing the need of the subject for respiratory support responsively to identifying that the subject is undergoing REM sleep.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the source of positive airway pressure causes the expansion of spring positioned between the mask and a retaining mechanism securing the mask to the subject.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein air from the source of positive airway pressure is applied to a closed cavity within the mask to cause the movement of the portion of the mask.

15. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein air from the source of positive airway pressure is prevented from entering the mask when the PAP is inactive.

16. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the source of positive airway pressure is operable to move a portion of the mask to cover a vent in the mask.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the source of positive airway pressure is operable to move a portion of the mask to provide to open a flow path for air to enter the airway of the subject.

18. An apparatus comprising:

a source of positive airway pressure (PAP);

a mask, coupled to the PAP source, and configured to be placed on a face of a subject;

a sensor configured to sense a respiratory-related parameter of the subject;

a control unit, configured to:

assess a need of the subject for respiratory support responsively to the respiratory-related parameter, and

in accordance with the assessed need, configure the mask to regulate the PAP provided to the face, by moving a portion of the mask, with the pressure of air provided by the source of positive airway pressure, to change the flow path of air into and out of the mask, wherein the control unit is configured to regulate the PAP by, in response to detecting a need for respiratory support, unblocking a vent hole so that air supplied to the mask flows into the mask.
