Abstract

Apparatus and methods are described including a catheter, a first pump disposed on the catheter, and a second pump disposed on the catheter, proximally to the first pump. A control unit is configured to control activation of the first and second pumps. The first and second pumps are configured, when activated, to pump fluid in opposite directions from one another. Other applications are also described.

Claims (20)

1. Apparatus comprising:

an occlusion element configured to be placed inside a vena cava of a subject at a location that is upstream of junctions of the vena cava with all renal veins of the subject, and to partially occlude the vena cava at the location;

one or more sensors configured to detect central venous pressure of the subject; and

a computer processor configured to:

receive the detected central venous pressure of the subject,

detect that the central venous pressure of the subject is elevated based upon the detected central venous pressure, and

modulate an extent to which the occlusion element occludes the vena cava at the location, at least partially responsively to the detected central venous pressure of the subject, effective to reduce renal venous pressure relative to the subject's central venous pressure.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the occlusion element comprises a balloon, and wherein the computer processor is configured to modulate the extent to which the occlusion element occludes the vena cava at the location by controlling inflation of the balloon.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the occlusion element comprises a frame that is covered in a blood-impermeable material, and wherein the computer processor is configured to modulate the extent to which the occlusion element occludes the vena cava at the location by controlling expansion of the frame.

4. The apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the computer processor is configured to control expansion of the frame by applying an electrical current to the frame.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising one or more sensors configured to detect renal pressure of the subject, wherein the computer processor is configured to modulate the extent to which the occlusion element occludes the vena cava at the location, at least partially responsively to the detected renal venous pressure of the subject.

6. A method comprising:

partially occluding a vena cava of a subject at a location that is upstream of junctions of the vena cava with all renal veins of the subject;

detecting central venous pressure of the subject;

detecting that the central venous pressure of the subject is elevated based upon the detected central venous pressure; and

modulating an extent to which the vena cava is occluded at the location, at least partially responsively to the detected central venous pressure of the subject, thereby reducing renal venous pressure relative to the subject's central venous pressure.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein partially occluding the subject's vena cava at the location comprises partially occluding the subject's vena cava at the location with a balloon, and wherein modulating the extent to which the vena cava is occluded at the location comprises controlling inflation of the balloon.

8. The method according to claim 6 , wherein partially occluding the subject's vena cava at the location comprises partially occluding the subject's vena cava at the location with a frame that is covered in a blood-impermeable material, and wherein modulating the extent to which the vena cava is occluded at the location comprises controlling expansion of the frame.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein controlling expansion of the frame comprises applying an electrical current to the frame.

10. The method according to claim 6 , further comprising detecting renal pressure of the subject, and wherein modulating the extent to which the vena cava is occluded at the location further comprises modulating the extent to which the vena cava is occluded at the location, at least partially responsively to the detected renal venous pressure of the subject.
