Abstract

Signals sensed from packaging of products are processed in a distributed reader and metadata routing system to provide metadata responses to mobile application programs. A routing system registers identifiers for different content ID schema. These identifiers are encoded packaging. Mobile device application programs are equipped with reader programs to extract identifiers from packaging. Metadata responses are identified by the ID provider of the content ID schema and extracted identifiers. The metadata routing system routes metadata responses to a requesting mobile device, supporting a variety of different ID providers and mobile device applications.

Claims (36)

1. A resolver system comprising:

a database system comprising one or more computers configured with instructions to register different content ID schemas of different mobile device application programs, the registering of the different content ID schemas comprising registering ID provider identifiers corresponding to the different content ID schemas;

the database system configured with instructions to register a set of identifiers for each of the different content ID schemas, wherein the identifiers in a content ID schema correspond to packaging encoded with identifiers from the content ID schema, and the identifiers are encoded in the packaging; wherein the ID provider identifiers are associated with different metadata responses for a identifier in plural different content ID schemas; and

a programmed processor configured with instructions for handling metadata requests from plural reader programs, wherein the plural reader programs are installed within the mobile device application programs in memory of mobile devices, each of the mobile devices configured with instructions of a reader program to receive an image signal sensed by the mobile device and decode digital data from the image signal sensed from the packaging;

the programmed processor configured with instructions to process a metadata request to obtain a ID provider identifier, and at least a first identifier extracted from a first image signal by a requesting mobile device making the metadata request;

the programmed processor further configured with instructions to provide the requesting mobile device with metadata identified by the ID provider identifier and the first identifier extracted from the first image signal; wherein the programmed processor is configured to route metadata requests based on the first identifier to different metadata responses based on the ID provider identifier.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein a first content ID schema is determined from the ID provider identifier provided by a first reader program used to extract the first identifier from the first image signal.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the identifiers of different content ID schema are derived from an image signal using different ID provider detectors.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein the different ID provider detectors are installed within a first reader program.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the first reader program comprises a plug-in of a first mobile device application program.

6. The system of claim 1 further comprising a traffic monitor, the traffic monitor comprising a programmed processor configured with instructions to log usage data from the metadata requests.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein the traffic monitor is configured to track the packaging, by tracking identifier detection by the mobile applications and user identification of the mobile devices executing the mobile applications, the tracking identifying flow of an object in a distribution channel.

8. A resolver system comprising:

a database system comprising one or more computers configured with instructions to register different content ID schemas of product packaging, the registering of the different content ID schemas comprising registering ID provider identifiers corresponding to the different content ID schemas;

the database system configured with instructions to register a set of identifiers for each of the different content ID schemas, wherein the identifiers in a content ID schema correspond to packaging encoded with identifiers from the content ID schema, and the identifiers are encoded in the packaging; wherein the ID provider identifiers are associated with different metadata responses for a identifier in plural different content ID schemas;

a programmed processor configured with instructions for handling metadata requests from reader programs, wherein the reader programs are installed within mobile device application programs in memory of mobile devices, each of the mobile devices configured with instructions of a reader program to receive an image signal sensed by the mobile device and decode digital data from the image signal sensed from the packaging;

the programmed processor configured with instructions to process a metadata request to obtain a ID provider identifier, and at least a first identifier extracted from a first image signal by a requesting mobile device making the metadata request;

the programmed processor further configured with instructions to provide the requesting mobile device with metadata identified by the ID provider identifier and the first identifier extracted from the first image signal; wherein the programmed processor is configured to route metadata requests based on the first identifier to different metadata responses based on the ID provider identifier; and

a traffic monitor, the traffic monitor comprising a programmed processor configured with instructions to log usage data from the metadata requests;

the traffic monitor configured to track the packaging, by tracking identifier detection by mobile applications and user identification of the mobile devices executing the mobile applications, the tracking identifying flow of an object in a distribution channel.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein a first content ID schema is determined from the ID provider identifier provided by a first reader program used to extract the first identifier from the first image signal.

10. The system of claim 8 wherein the identifiers of different content ID schema are derived from an image signal using different ID provider detectors.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein the different ID provider detectors are installed within a first reader program.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the first reader program comprises a plug-in of a first mobile device application program.

13. A resolver system comprising:

a database system comprising one or more computers configured with instructions to register different content ID schemas of product packaging, the registering of the different content ID schemas comprising registering ID provider identifiers corresponding to the different content ID schemas;

the database system configured with instructions to register a set of product identifiers for each of the different content ID schemas, wherein the product identifiers in a content ID schema correspond to packaging encoded with product identifiers from the content ID schema, and the product identifiers are encoded in the packaging, and the ID provider identifiers being associated with different metadata responses for a product identifier in plural different content ID schemas;

a programmed processor configured with instructions for handling metadata requests from reader programs, wherein the reader programs are installed within mobile device application programs in memory of mobile devices, each of the mobile devices configured with instructions of a reader program to receive an image signal sensed by the mobile device and decode digital data from the image signal sensed from the packaging;
