Abstract

A monitor includes a base, a cylindrical housing, rotatably connected to the base, and including an air-intake slot, and a collection media, a motor configured to rotate the cylindrical housing relative to the base, a power source, connected to the motor, and a processor connected to the motor and power source. The processor is configured to process information and, based on the processing, direct the motor to rotate the cylindrical housing so that airborne particles in ambient air pass through the air-intake slot and to the collection media.

Claims (46)

1. A device comprising:

a base;

a cylindrical housing, rotatably coupled to the base, and comprising an air-intake slot, and a collection media;

a motor, configured to rotate the cylindrical housing relative to the base;

a power source, coupled to the motor; and

a processor, coupled to the motor and the power source, wherein the processor is configured to process information and, based on the processing, direct the motor to rotate the cylindrical housing so that airborne particles in ambient air pass through the air-intake slot and to the collection media, and wherein the processor is configured to periodically rotate the cylindrical housing, thereby sampling the airborne particles in the ambient air from multiple directions.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein a vertical axis passes through the cylindrical housing and the motor rotates the cylindrical housing about the vertical axis.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the processor receives the information wirelessly from a remote server.

4. A device comprising:

a base;

a cylindrical housing, rotatably coupled to the base, and comprising an air-intake slot, and a collection media;

a motor, configured to rotate the cylindrical housing relative to the base;

a power source, coupled to the motor;

a processor, coupled to the motor and the power source, wherein the processor is configured to process information and, based on the processing, direct the motor to rotate the cylindrical housing so that airborne particles in ambient air pass through the air-intake slot and to the collection media; and

a plurality of airflow detectors disposed about the cylindrical housing and coupled to the processor, wherein the processor is configured to process data about ambient airflow detected by the plurality of airflow detectors to orient the air-intake slot into the ambient airflow.

5. The device of claim 4 wherein the plurality of airflow detectors comprise cantilever type airflow detectors.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein the device is located in an outdoor environment.

7. A device comprising:

a base;

a cylindrical housing, rotatably coupled to the base, and comprising an air-intake slot, and a collection media;

a motor, configured to rotate the cylindrical housing relative to the base;

a power source, coupled to the motor;

a processor, coupled to the motor and the power source, wherein the processor is configured to process information and, based on the processing, direct the motor to rotate the cylindrical housing so that airborne particles in ambient air pass through the air-intake slot and to the collection media; and wherein the collection media comprises an adhesive tape media contained within a removable cartridge inserted into the cylindrical housing, the removable cartridge comprising:

a particle intake zone, proximate to the air-intake slot, and through which the adhesive tape media is exposed to capture the airborne particles passing through the air-intake slot; and

an inspection zone at which the airborne particles captured at the particle intake zone are transported for optical imaging.

8. The device of claim 7 comprising a second motor to move the airborne particles captured by the adhesive tape media from the particle intake zone to the inspection zone.

9. The device of claim 1 comprising a camera sensor, a variable lens, a light emitting diode (LED) illumination source, an ultra-violet (UV) LED illumination source, and an imaging processing module contained within the cylindrical housing,

wherein the LED and UV LED illumination source illuminate the airborne particles collected onto the collection media for imaging by the camera sensor, the variable lens comprises a lens with an electronically controlled focal length, and the imaging processing module comprises logic to recognize particles of interest imaged by the camera sensor.

10. A device comprising:

a base;

a cylindrical housing, rotatably coupled to the base, and comprising an air-intake slot, a plurality of airflow detectors disposed about the cylindrical housing, and a collection media to capture airborne particles that pass through the air-intake slot;

a motor, configured to rotate the cylindrical housing relative to the base;

a battery power source, coupled to the motor; and

a processor, coupled to the motor, battery power source, and plurality of airflow detectors, wherein the processor is configured to process data about wind detected by the plurality of airflow detectors and, based on the processing, direct the motor to rotate the cylindrical housing so that the air-intake slot faces the wind.

11. The device of claim 10 comprising a camera sensor, a light emitting diode (LED) illumination source, and an ultra-violet (UV) LED illumination source contained within the cylindrical housing and coupled to the processor and battery power source.

12. The device of claim 10 wherein the collection media comprises an adhesive-coated tape contained within a cartridge, the cartridge being removable from the cylindrical housing and comprising:

a supply reel;

an uptake reel; and

a tape guide comprising a first segment exposed to the air-intake slot, and a second segment exposed to a camera sensor contained within the cylindrical housing, wherein the adhesive-coated tape extends from the supply reel, across the first and second segments of the tape guide, and to the uptake reel.

13. The device of claim 10 comprising:

a wireless network interface controller, coupled to the processor, that receives a plurality of instructions from a remote server over a wireless network, the plurality of instructions comprising:

a first instruction to move the collection media; and

a second instruction to transmit to the remote server an image of the airborne particles that have been captured on the collection media.

14. The device of claim 10 wherein the processor is configured to periodically rotate the cylindrical housing.

15. The device of claim 10 wherein the air-intake slot is located between a top end of the cylindrical housing, and a bottom end of the cylindrical housing, the bottom end being opposite the top end, and closer to the base than the top end.
