Abstract

A sensor coupled to an AR/VR headset detects an eye convergence distance. A processor adjusts a focus distance for a virtual camera that determines rendering of a three-dimensional (3D) object for a display device of the headset, based on at least one of the eye convergence distance or a directed focus of attention for the at least one of the VR content or the AR content.

Claims (25)

1. A method comprising:

detecting, by a sensor coupled to a headset comprising a 2D screen configured for displaying stereoscopic virtual reality (VR) content when viewed directly through a pair of lenses a fixed distance from the 2D screen, an eye convergence distance for a user of the headset;

determining, by a processor controlling an output of the headset, at least one of a predetermined region of, or object in, a virtual scene of the VR content, which region or object is indicated for attracting visual attention of the user for a defined duration; and

adjusting, by the processor, a focus distance for a virtual camera that determines rendering of a three-dimensional (3D) object for a display device of the headset, to match a depth of the at least one of the predetermined region of, or object in, the virtual scene for the defined duration.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting comprises setting the focus distance further based on the eye convergence distance.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the setting is performed for at least every rendered key frame in a continuous sequence of rendered frames.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising limiting a depth-of-field for at least one of the virtual camera or an associated rendering engine to provide a shallow depth centered on the at least one of the predetermined region of, or object in, the virtual scene.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the predetermined region of, or object in, the virtual scene is correlated to a narrative of prerecorded VR content.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising providing at least one additional sensory cue via an output of the headset, configured for directing attention of a viewer to the at least one of the predetermined region of, or object in, the virtual scene.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the at least one additional sensory cue is selected from the group consisting of: a prerecorded verbal cue, a sound effect, or a visual effect.

8. An apparatus for controlling a headset for stereoscopic virtual reality (VR), comprising:

a processor, a memory coupled to the processor, and a stereoscopic display device coupled to the processor, wherein the memory holds instructions that when executed by the processor, cause the apparatus to perform the operations of:

detecting, by a sensor coupled to the stereoscopic display device comprising a 2D screen configured for displaying virtual reality (VR) content when viewed directly through a pair of lenses a fixed distance from the 2D screen, an eye convergence distance for a user of the stereoscopic display device;

determining at least one of a predetermined region of, or object in, a virtual scene of the VR content, which region or object is indicated for attracting visual attention of the user for a defined duration; and

adjusting, by the processor controlling an output of the stereoscopic display device, a focus distance for a virtual camera that determines rendering of a three-dimensional (3D) object for a display device of the stereoscopic display device, to match a depth of the at least one of the predetermined region of, or object in, the virtual scene for the defined duration.

9. An apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the adjusting comprises setting the focus distance further based on the eye convergence distance.

10. An apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the setting is performed for at least every rendered key frame in a continuous sequence of rendered frames.

11. An apparatus according to claim 8 , further comprising limiting a depth-of-field for at least one of the virtual camera or an associated rendering engine to provide a shallow depth centered on the at least one of the predetermined region of, or object in, the virtual scene.

12. An apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the at least one of the predetermined region of, or object in, the virtual scene is correlated to a narrative of prerecorded VR content.

13. An apparatus according to claim 12 , further comprising providing at least one additional sensory cue via an output of the stereoscopic display device, configured for directing attention of a viewer to the at least one of the predetermined region of, or object in, the virtual scene.

14. An apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein the at least one additional sensory cue is selected from the group consisting of: a prerecorded verbal cue, a sound effect, or a visual effect.

15. An apparatus for controlling a headset for stereoscopic virtual reality (VR), comprising:

means for detecting, using a sensor coupled to a stereoscopic display device comprising a 2D screen configured for displaying virtual reality (VR) content when viewed directly through a pair of lenses a fixed distance from the 2D screen, an eye convergence distance for a user of the stereoscopic display device;

means for determining at least one of a predetermined region of, or object in, a virtual scene of the VR content, which region or object is indicated for attracting visual attention of the user for a defined duration; and

means for adjusting, using a processor controlling an output of the stereoscopic display device, a focus distance for a virtual camera that determines rendering of a three-dimensional (3D) object for a display device of the stereoscopic display device, to match a depth of the at least one of the predetermined region of, or object in, the virtual scene.
