Abstract

A method of utilizing carbon monoxide to increase oil recovery includes injecting an effective amount of carbon monoxide, either as pure carbon monoxide or as a component of a gas mixture, into an oil reservoir. The carbon monoxide increases oil flow and rate of oil flow from the oil reservoir through a variety of chemical mechanisms.

Claims (24)

1. A method of increasing the rate of oil recovery from a reservoir, the method comprising:

injecting a gaseous stream comprising at least 10% carbon monoxide into a reservoir under immiscible conditions at natural temperature of the reservoir, the reservoir at a pressure less than minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) of pure carbon dioxide for the reservoir, and

the carbon monoxide chemically interacting with oil and minerals in the reservoir under immiscible conditions thus at least lowering the interfacial tension (IFT) of the oil, changing the wettability of the reservoir, mobilizing asphaltenes, or the carbon monoxide solubilizing in the oil,

the rate of oil recovery being increased as compared to a rate of oil recovery achieved by injecting pure carbon dioxide into the reservoir.

2. The method of increasing the rate of oil recovery according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon monoxide is at least 20% of the gaseous stream injected into the reservoir.

3. The method of increasing the rate of oil recovery according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon monoxide is at least 30% of the gaseous stream injected into the reservoir.

4. The method of increasing the rate of oil recovery according to claim 1 , wherein the injection takes place during a primary phase, a secondary phase or a tertiary phase of oil recovery operations.

5. The method of increasing the rate of oil recovery according to claim 1 , wherein carbon dioxide and the carbon monoxide are injected into the reservoir.

6. The method of increasing the rate of oil recovery according to claim 5 , wherein the gaseous stream further comprises nitrogen.

7. The method of increasing the rate of oil recovery according to claim 1 , wherein injecting the gaseous stream into a reservoir at natural temperature comprises injecting the gaseous stream into a reservoir that has a temperature less than 250° F.

8. The method of increasing the rate of oil recovery according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises increasing the rate of heavy oil recovery from the reservoir.

9. The method of increasing the rate of oil recovery according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises recovering heavy oil from the reservoir.

10. The method of increasing the rate of oil recovery according to claim 9 , comprising:

injecting a gas mixture comprising carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into the reservoir at natural temperature.

11. The method of increasing the rate of oil recovery according to claim 10 , wherein the gaseous stream comprises the carbon dioxide, the carbon monoxide and other hydrocarbon gases and non-hydrocarbon gases.

12. The method of increasing the rate of oil recovery according to claim 9 , wherein injecting the gaseous stream into a reservoir at natural temperature comprises injecting the gaseous stream into a reservoir that has a temperature less than 250° F.

13. A method of increasing the rate of heavy oil recovery from a reservoir, the method comprising:

injecting a gaseous stream comprising at least 10% carbon monoxide into a reservoir under immiscible conditions at natural temperature of the reservoir the reservoir at a pressure less than minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) of pure carbon dioxide for the reservoir, and

the carbon monoxide chemically interacting with oil and minerals in the reservoir under immiscible conditions at least lowering the interfacial tension (IFT) of the oil, changing the wettability of the reservoir, mobilizing asphaltenes, or the carbon monoxide solubilizing in the heavy oil,

the rate of oil recovery being increased as compared to a rate of heavy oil recovery achieved by injecting pure carbon dioxide into the reservoir.

14. The method of increasing the rate of heavy oil recovery according to claim 13 , wherein the gaseous stream comprises at least 30% carbon monoxide.

15. The method of increasing the rate of heavy oil recovery according to claim 13 , wherein the gaseous stream comprises the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.

16. The method of increasing the rate of heavy oil recovery according to claim 15 , wherein the gaseous stream comprises the carbon dioxide, the carbon monoxide and other hydrocarbon gases and non-hydrocarbon gases.

17. The method of increasing the rate of heavy oil recovery according to claim 15 , wherein the carbon monoxide and the carbon dioxide have a symbiotic relationship.
