Abstract

A coated paperboard including a paperboard substrate having a first side and a second side, and a multilayer coating having two or more layers in contact with the first side of the paperboard substrate, the multilayer coating including a base coating in contact with the paperboard substrate, the base coating having a coat weight from 6 to 10 pounds per 3000 ft 2 , and a top coating forming the outermost layer of the multilayer coating, the top coating having a coat weight from 3 to 10 pounds per 3000 ft 2 , wherein the multilayer coating comprises binder and pigment, the binder comprising one or more synthetic polymer binders and one or more natural biodegradable binders, and wherein the coated paperboard has a caliper of at least 0.010″.

Claims (32)

1. A coated paperboard comprising:

a paperboard substrate having a first side and a second side; and

a multilayer coating having two or more layers in contact with the first side of the paperboard substrate, the multilayer coating comprising a base coating in contact with the paperboard substrate, the base coating having a coat weight from 6 to 10 pounds per 3000 ft 2 , and a top coating forming the outermost layer of the multilayer coating, the top coating having a coat weight from 3 to 10 pounds per 3000 ft 2 ,

wherein the multilayer coating comprises binder and pigment, the binder comprising one or more synthetic polymer binders and one or more natural biodegradable binders, and

wherein the coated paperboard has a caliper of at least 0.010″.

2. The coated paperboard of claim 1 wherein the multilayer coating is further applied in contact with the second side of the paperboard substrate.

3. The coated paperboard of claim 1 wherein the multilayer coating has two layers, and wherein the top coating is formed in contact with the base coating.

4. The coated paperboard of claim 1 wherein the coated paperboard has a caliper of at least 0.012″.

5. The coated paperboard of claim 1 wherein the binder-to-pigment ratio in the multilayer coating is between 10 to 25 parts binder per 100 parts pigment, by weight.

6. The coated paperboard of claim 5 wherein the binder-to-pigment ratio in the multilayer coating is between 12 to 22 parts binder per 100 parts pigment, by weight.

7. The coated paperboard of claim 1 wherein the one or more natural biodegradable binders include at least one of polysaccharide, protein, and derivatives thereof.

8. The coated paperboard of claim 1 wherein the one or more natural biodegradable binders comprises between 1 to 10 parts per 100 parts pigment, by weight.

9. The coated paperboard of claim 1 wherein the multilayer coating includes two layers, and wherein the total coating weight is 9 to 20 pounds per 3000 ft 2 .

10. The coated paperboard of claim 1 wherein the pigment comprises at least one of a clay and calcium carbonate.

11. A coated paperboard comprising:

a paperboard substrate having a first side and a second side; and

a coating having at least one layer in contact with the first side of the paperboard substrate, the coating having a coat weight from 9 to 15 pounds per 3000 ft 2 ,

wherein the coating comprises binder and pigment, the binder comprising one or more synthetic polymer binders and one or more natural biodegradable binders, and

wherein the coated paperboard has a caliper of at least 0.010″.

12. The coated paperboard of claim 11 further comprising a coating having at least one layer in contact with the second side of the paperboard substrate.

13. The coated paperboard of claim 11 wherein the coated paperboard has a caliper of at least 0.012″.

14. The coated paperboard of claim 11 wherein the binder-to-pigment ratio in the coating is between 10 to 25 parts binder per 100 parts pigment, by weight.

15. The coated paperboard of claim 14 wherein the binder-to-pigment ratio in the coating is between 12 to 22 parts binder per 100 parts pigment, by weight.

16. The coated paperboard of claim 11 wherein the one or more natural biodegradable binders include at least one of polysaccharide, protein, and derivatives thereof.

17. The coated paperboard of claim 11 wherein the one or more natural biodegradable binders comprises between 1 to 10 parts per 100 parts pigment, by weight.

18. The coated paperboard of claim 11 wherein the pigment comprises at least one of a clay and calcium carbonate.

19. A method of treating paperboard, the method comprising:

providing a paperboard substrate having a first side and a second side; and

applying to the first side a multilayer coating having two or more layers, by applying a base coating in contact with the paperboard substrate, the base coating having a coat weight from 6 to 10 pounds per 3000 ft 2 , and applying a top coating forming the outermost layer of the multilayer coating, the top coating having a coat weight from 3 to 10 pounds per 3000 ft 2 ,

wherein the multilayer coating comprises binder and pigment, the binder comprising one or more synthetic polymer binders and one or more natural biodegradable binders, and

wherein the treated paperboard has a caliper of at least 0.010″.

20. The method of claim 19 further comprising applying the multilayer coating to the second side of the paperboard substrate.
