Abstract

Some embodiments include a scanning module with an optical reader coupled to a moveable carriage configured to move the optical reader in a first direction. In some embodiments, the optical reader includes excitation sources, emission detectors, emission energy conditioning elements, and a tape drive configured and arranged to selectively advance a tape in a second direction which is substantially perpendicular to the first direction. Further, some embodiments include a bar code reading station positioned adjacent to the moveable carriage. Other embodiments include an objective lens.

Claims (27)

1. A scanning module comprising:

an optical reader coupled to a moveable carriage configured to move the optical reader in a first direction, the optical reader comprising excitation sources, emission detectors, emission energy conditioning elements, and an objective lens;

a tape drive configured and arranged to selectively advance a tape in a second direction, the second direction being substantially perpendicular to the first direction; and

a bar code reading station positioned adjacent to the moveable carriage.

2. The scanning module of claim 1 , wherein the excitation sources comprise at least a first excitation source and a second excitation source, and the emission detectors include at least a first emission detector and a second emission detector.

3. The scanning module of claim 2 , wherein the first emission detector is configured and arranged for detecting both a first fluorophore emission originating from excitation of a first fluorophore, and a second fluorophore emission originating from excitation of a second fluorophore.

4. The scanning module of claim 2 , wherein the excitation sources further comprise a third excitation source.

5. The scanning module of claim 4 , wherein the third excitation source is configured and arranged to enable excitation energy from the third excitation source to pass through the objective lens.

6. The scanning module of claim 1 , wherein the emission energy conditioning elements include at least a first beam splitter and a second beam splitter.

7. The scanning module of claim 6 , wherein the first and second beam splitters are positioned to reflect a first excitation energy through the objective lens, and wherein the first beam splitter is configured and arranged to transmit excitation energy from a second excitation source.

8. The scanning module of claim 7 , wherein the second beam splitter is configured and arranged to reflect the excitation energy from the second excitation source through the objective lens.

9. The scanning module of claim 7 , wherein the second beam splitter is further configured and arranged to transmit a fluorophore emission received from the objective lens.

10. A scanner comprising:

a bar code reading station positioned adjacent to an optical reader, the optical reader being movable in a first direction and comprising:

at least a first excitation source and a second excitation source;

at least a first emission detector positioned between the first and second excitation sources, the first emission detector configured and arranged for detecting both a first fluorophore emission originating from excitation of a first fluorophore, and a second fluorophore emission originating from excitation of a second fluorophore; and

an objective lens characterized by an optical path.

11. The scanner of claim 10 , further comprising a tape drive configured and arranged to selectively advance a tape in a second direction, the second direction being substantially perpendicular to the first direction.

12. The scanner of claim 10 , further comprising emission energy conditioning elements including at least a first beam splitter and a second beam splitter, wherein the first and second beam splitters are positioned to reflect a first excitation energy from the first excitation source through the objective lens, and wherein the first beam splitter is configured and arranged to transmit excitation energy from the second excitation source, and wherein the second beam splitter is configured and arranged to reflect the excitation energy from the second excitation source through the objective lens.

13. The scanner of claim 12 , further comprising a second emission detector positioned in the optical path that extends through the objective lens and the second beam splitter, wherein the second beam splitter is positioned between the objective lens and the second emission detector.

14. The scanner of claim 13 , wherein the second emission detector is configured and arranged to detect a third fluorophore emission originating from excitation of a third fluorophore by a third excitation source of the optical reader.

15. The scanner of claim 14 , wherein the third excitation source is configured and arranged to enable excitation energy from the third excitation source to pass through the objective lens.

16. The scanner of claim 12 , wherein the emission energy conditioning elements further include a third beam splitter.

17. The scanner of claim 16 , wherein the third beam splitter is configured and arranged to enable passage of excitation energy from a third fluorophore excitation source to the objective lens.

18. The scanner of claim 16 , wherein the emission energy conditioning elements further include a fourth beam splitter.

19. The scanner of claim 18 , wherein the fourth beam splitter is configured and arranged to reflect excitation energy from the third fluorophore excitation source and through the third beam splitter to the objective lens.

20. The scanner claim 16 , wherein the second, third, and fourth beam splitters are positioned between the second emission detector and the objective lens, and the first beam splitter is positioned between the second beam splitter and the second excitation source.
