Abstract

In one general aspect, a composite foam comprises a non-layered mixture of a polymeric foam with a plurality of voids; and a plurality of conductive fillers disposed in the polymeric foam. The conductive fillers are disposed in an even manner from outer surface to outer surface. In some implementations, the conductive fillers are up to 25% by weight of the composite foam. In some implementations, the composite foam may be used as padding. In some implementations, the composite foam may be used as a strain gauge.

Claims (40)

1. A shoe insole comprising:

a composite polymeric foam including conductive elements dispersed throughout the polymeric foam in an even manner from outer surface to outer surface, the composite polymeric foam generating electric potential without a current producing device in response to an impact event;

at least one probe in contact with the composite polymeric foam;

a voltage detector coupled to the at least one probe configured to detect electric potential generated by the composite polymeric foam in response to the impact event; and

a memory coupled to the voltage detector, the memory storing voltage data relating to the electric potential generated.

2. The shoe insole of claim 1 , wherein the conductive elements are up to 25% by weight of the composite polymeric foam.

3. The shoe insole of claim 1 , further comprising:

a plurality of probes disposed in the composite polymeric foam, the at least one probe being one of the plurality of probes,

wherein the voltage detector is further configured to obtain electric potential data from a plurality of locations, each location corresponding to a probe of the plurality of probes.

4. The shoe insole of claim 1 , wherein the voltage data relating to the electric potential generated includes a time the electric potential is detected.

5. The shoe insole of claim 1 , wherein the memory stores voltage data for a plurality of impact events.

6. The shoe insole of claim 5 , further comprising:

at least one controller;

a transmitter; and

at least one memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one controller, cause the at least one controller to:

transmit the voltage data from the memory to a second computing device communicatively coupled to the transmitter.

7. The shoe insole of claim 6 , wherein the instructions further include instructions that cause the at least one controller to transmit the voltage data in response to a request initiated by a user of the second computing device.

8. The shoe insole of claim 1 , wherein the conductive elements include conductive nanoparticles.

9. The shoe insole of claim 1 , wherein the composite polymeric foam mimics physical properties of foam-based padding in a shoe.

10. An apparatus comprising:

padding for a sole of a shoe, the padding including at least one region of composite polymeric foam including conductive elements dispersed throughout the composite polymeric foam in an even manner from outer surface to outer surface, the composite polymeric foam generating electric potential, without a current producing device, in response to an impact event;

a probe in contact with the composite polymeric foam;

a voltage detector coupled to the probe;

a controller; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed by the controller, causes the controller to collect voltage data from electrical potential data for a set of repeated impact events.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the memory further stores instructions that, when executed by the controller, cause the controller to:

transmit the voltage data to a computing device.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the computing device is a smart watch, a smart phone, a tablet, or a personal computer.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising:

a memory store storing the voltage data; and

a transmitter.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the memory further stores instructions that, when executed by the controller, cause the controller to transmit the voltage data to a second computing device in response to a request from a user of the second computing device.

15. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the padding is an insert for the shoe.

16. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the composite polymeric foam represents a majority of surface area in the sole of the shoe.

17. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the padding includes a plurality of regions of composite polymeric foam, each region of the plurality of regions being in contact with a respective probe, and wherein the voltage detector is coupled to the respective probes.

18. The apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising:

a plurality of probes in contact with the at least one region of composite polymeric foam, the probe being one of the plurality of probes, each probe of the plurality of probes being coupled to the voltage detector,

wherein the memory includes instructions that, when executed by the controller, causes the controller to collect voltage data from electrical potential data detected at least two probes of the plurality of probes for the set of repeated impact events.

19. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the conductive elements include conductive nanoparticles or conductive fillers.

20. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the conductive elements include conductive nanoparticles and conductive fillers.
