Technologies for efficiently booting sleds in a disaggregated architecture
Technologies for efficiently booting sleds in a disaggregated architecture include a sled. The sled includes a network interface controller, a set of processors, and firmware that includes an operating system. Additionally, the sled includes circuitry to perform, with multiple processors in the set of processors, a boot process. The circuitry is also to initialize the operating system present in the firmware, receive, with the network interface controller and from another sled, an assignment of a workload, and execute the assigned workload with the operating system.
1. A sled comprising:
a network interface controller;
a set of processors;
firmware that includes an operating system; and
circuitry to (i) perform, with multiple processors in the set of processors, a boot process that includes to perform a first subset of boot operations with a first processor in the set of processors, and to perform a second subset of boot operations with a second processor in the set of processors, the second subset of boot operations to include the second processor to copy an operating system boot sector into a memory of the sled, (ii) initialize the operating system present in the firmware, (iii) receive, with the network interface controller and from another sled, an assignment of a workload, and (iv) execute the assigned workload with the operating system.
2. The sled of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is further to:
determine whether to utilize, during the boot process, stored device data indicative of the presence and one or more settings of a device in the sled; and
wherein to perform the boot process comprises to read, in response to a determination to utilize stored device data, stored device data produced in a previous boot process of the sled.
3. The sled of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is further to:
determine whether to utilize, during the boot process, stored device data indicative of the presence and one or more settings of a device in the sled; and
wherein to perform the boot process comprises to perform, in response to a determination not to utilize stored device data, one or more device detection operations.
4. The sled of claim 1 , the first processor comprises a boot strap processor, wherein the boot strap processor is to enable the second processor.
5. The sled of claim 4 , the second processor comprises an application processor.
6. The sled of claim 1 , the second processor comprises an application processor, wherein the second subset of boot operations further includes one or more device detection operations.
7. The sled of claim 6 , the one or more device detection operations comprises a bus initialization operation.
8. The sled of claim 6 , the one or more device detection operations comprises a bus enumeration operation.
9. The sled of claim 6 , the one or more device detection operations comprises to produce device data indicative of the presence of one or more devices in the sled.
10. The sled of claim 1 , wherein to initialize the operating system comprises to initialize the operating system without providing an advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI) table or a system management basic input output system (SMBIOS) table to the operating system.
11. The sled of claim 1 , wherein to execute the assigned workload with the operating system comprises to access one or more devices of the sled without utilizing a device data table populated during a boot process of the sled.
12. One or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media comprising a plurality of instructions stored thereon that, in response to being executed, cause a sled to:
perform, with multiple processors in a set of processors of the sled, a boot process that includes to perform a first subset of boot operations with a first processor in the set of processors, and to perform a second subset of boot operations with a second processor in the set of processors, the second subset of boot operations to include the second processor to copy an operating system boot sector into a memory of the sled;
initialize an operating system present in a firmware of the sled;
receive, with a network interface controller of the sled, and from another sled, an assignment of a workload; and
execute the assigned workload with the operating system.
13. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 12 , wherein, when executed, the plurality of instructions further cause the sled to:
determine whether to utilize, during the boot process, stored device data indicative of the presence and one or more settings of a device in the sled; and
wherein to perform the boot process comprises to read, in response to a determination to utilize stored device data, stored device data produced in a previous boot process of the sled.
14. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 12 , wherein, when executed, the plurality of instructions further cause the sled to:
determine whether to utilize, during the boot process, stored device data indicative of the presence and one or more settings of a device in the sled; and
wherein to perform the boot process comprises to perform, in response to a determination not to utilize stored device data, one or more device detection operations.
15. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 12 , the first processor comprises a boot strap processor, wherein the boot strap processor is to enable the second processor.
16. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 15 , the second processor comprises an application processor.
17. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 12 , the second processor comprises an application processor, wherein the second subset of boot operations further includes one or more device detection operations.
18. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 17 , the one or more device detection operations comprises a bus initialization operation.
19. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 17 , the one or more device detection operations comprises a bus enumeration operation.
20. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 17 , the one or more device detection operations comprises to produce device data indicative of the presence of one or more devices in the sled.
21. A sled comprising:
means for performing, with multiple processors in a set of processors of the sled, a boot process that includes to perform a first subset of boot operations with a first processor in the set of processors, and to perform a second subset of boot operations with a second processor in the set of processors, the second subset of boot operations to include the second processor to copy an operating system boot sector into a memory of the sled;
circuitry for initializing an operating system present in a firmware of the sled;
circuitry for receiving, with a network interface controller of the sled, and from another sled, an assignment of a workload; and
circuitry for executing the assigned workload with the operating system.
22. A method comprising:
performing, with multiple processors in a set of processors of a sled, a boot process that includes to perform a first subset of boot operations with a first processor in the set of processors, and to perform a second subset of boot operations with a second processor in the set of processors, the second subset of boot operations to include the second processor to copy an operating system boot sector into a memory of the sled;
initializing, by the sled, an operating system present in a firmware of the sled;
receiving, with a network interface controller of the sled, and from another sled, an assignment of a workload; and
executing, by the sled, the assigned workload with the operating system.
23. The method of claim 22 , further comprising:
determining, by the sled, whether to utilize, during the boot process, stored device data indicative of the presence and one or more settings of a device in the sled; and
wherein performing the boot process comprises reading, in response to a determination to utilize stored device data, stored device data produced in a previous boot process of the sled.
24. The method of claim 22 , further comprising:
determining, by the sled, whether to utilize, during the boot process, stored device data indicative of the presence and one or more settings of a device in the sled; and
wherein performing the boot process comprises performing, in response to a determination not to utilize stored device data, one or more device detection operations.
